Japan: Mitsubishi Pajero / Montero production to end by August 2019

According to a media report, Mitsubishi will end production of the Pajero SUV in Japan. The company also plans to assemble only 700 units till August 2019.

The Pajero SUV has been on sale since 1982. More than 6,40,000 units of the car have been sold till date. The production will end with a Final Edition special variant. One of the reasons reported for this is the severe decline in demand for the SUV last year. According to reports, poor fuel economy figures and Mitsubishi’s more economical Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross have been the reason for the low demand.

The Final Edition cars will be powered by a 3.2-liter turbo diesel engine that produces 190 BHP and 441 Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via a 5-speed automatic gearbox and a Super Select 4WD II system with lockable rear differential. The Final Edition will also come with 7-inch infotainment screen, electric driver and passenger seats, leather upholstery, electric sunroof and winter package.

Mitsubishi is expected to continue selling the Pajero in other for over 70 markets outside Japan.

I am more curious as to what Mitsubishi Motors is unto? No new products, having a huge potential & a brand name in India, they are letting it go. Save for Toyota, no other Japanese manufacturers appear serious about India.

The Pajero with its extreme reliability became standard on the Aussie outback. You may be a day plus from the next town, so it is your life on the line.

I am interested in what will replace it?

Came really close to picking up one last year before settling for an Outlander in view of the new platform, better engine & lower running costs. One of the best selling SUVs here in UAE. Its a VFM offering, a mid level trim vehicle can be had for around AED110,000 (~ Rs.20,00,000) and huge discounts going on almost all of the year!

Both the Toyota LC and Nissan Patrol are a generation ahead while there's not even proper rumours about what Mitsubishi would replace such a legendary SUV with. First the Lancer, now this.

Mitsubishi was known by very few models. I remember seeing only the Land Cruisers and Pajeros being used for the desert safaris in Dubai where no third contender could stand.

If Mitsubishi cannot sell the Pajero, they might as well leave the automobile market for good.

Lancer has bitten the dust already, Eclipse is having identity issues, Mirage is not selling even close to what Honda, Toyota and even Suzuki manage and now Pajero is gone.

Bottomline, The management at MItsubishi Japan are out of funds and are slowly killing platforms riding towards the sunset. The Nissan- Renault Saga has also sidelined this small Japanese knight.

Pajero is severely outdated in both looks and interiors. Not many people would buy Pajero in the current form as the competition looks much modern.

All I can say is, FINALLY. This 4th-gen Pajero (sold as Montero in India) has been on sale since 2006, and has practically the same body as the 3rd-gen that arrived in 1999. So, in a nutshell, one can trace the current Pajero's roots back 20 years . An awfully long time. That said, in the same time span, we have only seen two new generations of the Landcruiser too.

Mitsubishi has been too cash-strapped to develop an all-new replacement from the ground up. However, I thought after becoming part of Renault-Nissan, they will. After all, few SUV brands can touch brand "PAJERO".

For the Indian market, the Pajero was a dream for many auto enthusiasts. However the dream was never fulfilled for many due to lack of sales and near extinct service centers. Mitsubishi, while doing well abroad, never really cared much for the Indian market. The service is where they suffered. The latest version of the Pajero never even came to India. Only time will tell what the replacement will be.

It still continues to show decent demand, despite the fact that its an old platform, and also that the sunset is almost upon us.

From this link:

Another solid contributor over Q1 was the ancient-but-proven Pajero (801, up 8 per cent).

The lesson here clearly is that, if your pricing is right and your cars are reliable, people will buy them.
This is an April report, between.

Mitsubishi has released a 'Spirit of Pajero' tribute video. Unfortunately not in English, not even subtitles.

Mitsubishi phases out Pajero with Final Edition

The production of the iconic Mitsubishi Pajero has finally ended after a 40-year run. The last batch of 800 units is being offered in Australia as the "Final Edition" to mark the end of production.

The Pajero Final Edition comes with special badging and a larger fuel tank, besides additional standard features.

The SUV is powered by a 3.2-litre diesel engine that makes 190 BHP and 441 Nm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission and a rather capable four-wheel-drive system.

In 2019, Mitsubishi had introduced a similar Final Edition in Japan, where production was limited to 700 units.

Mitsubishi had 2 legends. They killed them both.

First the Evo and now this. These 2 products defined the brand's DNA and Mitsubishi seems to be turning into a Nokia.

Let's hope that with Ralliart revival they also get the Evos back.

Pajero has a fan following of its own including me. Never got the chance to get the Pajero SFX or the Montero but i have the Pajero sport for more than 8 years now and she still remains my favourite drive for the highways. Offroad duties are now done by the new Thar.

Interesting comparison. Nokia's coming back with a bang with 5G though. Let's hope Mitsubishi gets some revival soon.

Well I guess Mitsubishi have milked it as far as possible. Sadly, the current 4th generation Pajero's are an absolute disgrace to the brand.

This is the main reason people stopped taking it seriously. The "facelifted" model introduced every year essentially means changing the position of the badge and design of the tail-mounted spare wheel. Living in the middle-east and having seen hundreds of these on the road, its telling something when people still prefer the 2nd gen's ,with their utilitarian interiors, than to the new one's with its creature comforts but bone-jarring suspension. The old Pajero's A/C might not work but they will rarely die on you in the middle on road, while the new ones feel dead to drive and have absolutely no durability. Mitsubishi has sadly allowed the legacy of this amazing brand to die and it may finally time to put it to rest.

It is sad indeed. One of the most iconic cars coming to an end, and along with it, Mitsubishi's identity of being a legendary car maker. I wonder what Mitsubishi's automobile plans are for the future.

Since I live in Tokyo, I realise how big Mitsubishi is and how small their automobile business is. It is almost a rounding error. Mitsubishi is a mega-corp and the Chairman or Mitsubishi corporation is considered as one of the most powerful man in Japan. Even if they completely exit the automobile space, Mitsubishi will continue to remain one of the most iconic companies of Japan.

Will be epic. Imagine a new evo and a new Pajero. As long as the DNA stays
