Ferrari has confirmed that its next hybrid supercar will debut later this month. Though details about the new supercar are still very much obscure, it will make its debut at the end of May in Maranello, Italy, according to Ferrari CEO Louis Camilleri, who made the confirmation as part of a quarterly earnings call.
Camilleri said Ferrari will debut five new models this year. The first was the 710-horsepower F8 Tributo, effectively the replacement for the 488 GTB, that debuted in Geneva this past march.
The hybrid will be the second car, which means Ferrari has three more surprises in store over the next six or seven months. In the question-and-answer portion of the call, Camilleri confirmed that two of those three "will probably be presented in September," which would coincide with the Frankfurt Motor Show, and the fifth and final new car will arrive "toward the end of the year."
Test mules based on the 488
Automotive News reported in February that this new hybrid system will use a V8 engine as opposed to the V12 found in its last hybrid, LaFerrari. Rumour has it this upcoming hybrid would use a V8 or a V6 that would help Ferrari meet more stringent emissions targets. The V-6 could take the form of a retuned and reworked version of the Alfa Romeo Quadrofoglio’s twin-turbocharged V-6, which itself is derived from a Ferrari engine.
When Camilleri was asked where the upcoming model sat in Ferrari’s range, the CEO answered with, "The model that's coming in three weeks' time will be at the high end and it will have a supercar performance. When I say it's a high end, it will be above the 812 Superfast. So it's not a 488 replacement per se.” Ferrari’s 812 Superfast puts out 789 horsepower from its naturally aspirated V12.
If this upcoming hybrid supercar is above the 812 Superfast, then it could potentially dethrone the 720S, Aventador SVJ, and the recently debuted F8 Tributo.
An invitation to the debut of the Ferrari supercar claims that Ferrari will show a "Super Ferrari" with 986 horsepower on May 31.
If the new car does have 986 hp, it will be more powerful than the current flagship, LaFerrari.
