Mercedes-AMG unveils 2.0-liter 416 BHP engine

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled a 4-cylinder engine dubbed the M 139. The 2.0-liter engine develops 416 BHP and is claimed to be the world's most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine in series production.

The 1,991cc, four-pot engine will be offered in 2 states of tunes – a top-spec 416 BHP / 500 Nm tune and a standard 382 BHP / 480 Nm. The maximum speed of the engine is 7,200 rpm and the wet weight is 160.5 kg.

Both versions use a twin-scroll turbocharger with boost pressures of 2.1 bar and 1.9 bar in the higher and lower states respectively. There are two flow passages for the turbine housing and they deliver exhaust flow to the turbine separately. This is claimed to improve the responsiveness at low engine speeds. The turbo is air, oil and water cooled and has a maximum speed of 1,69,000 rpm.

Compared to the preceding M 133 engine, the orientation of the new engine has changed. It is rotated around its vertical axis by 180-degrees so that the turbo and exhaust manifold now sit at the rear, near the firewall, while the intake is positioned towards the front of the car. Other features include an aluminium crankcase, larger and repositioned exhaust valves, direct and intake manifold fuel injection, electric water pump amongst others.

In 2014 there was another engine which was limited to a production run of 40 units and had 440 BHP from its 2.0 litre turbocharged engine : Mitsubishi Evolution FQ-440 MR. It had 440 bhp@6800rpm and torque was rated at 559 Nm@3100rpm. Makes me wonder how advanced Mitsubishi engine was at that time. Pardon me for being off topic, but one Mitsubishi engine family is still under production since 1986: Mitsubishi 6G7.

Another aspect is how relatively lightweight the Mercedes-AMG M139 engine is considering its a forced induction unit. A humble efficiency oriented K10B weighs in at 47 kg dry.

This 2L from AMG offers more than 208 BHP/L and the specific output of even the base spec is more than 191 BHP/L.

EDIT: Rehaan, you must have been talking about NA engines. However, this is still nuts.

We can all expect those excessive pops, bangs and crackles from the exhaust in addition to the sounds being piped through the speakers for added drama. I hope there would be an option of turning the sound down though, as it does get tiring after some time. I had a chance to drive a friend's Golf R station wagon (called variant) and the burbles from the exhaust felt too unnecessary sometimes

Re: Mercedes-AMG unveils 2.0-liter 416 BHP engine

This required some serious engineering. They began by placing the turbochargers deep in the engine bay to get rid of turbo lag, and they added two separate cooling systems, one for the block and another for the head. They then added roller bearings to the turbocharger, increased the size of the exhaust valves by 18 per cent, increased compression ratio from 8.6:1 to 9.0:1, and the maximum boost to 30.5 psi. This is a clever engine.

Two separate versions will be available for the AMG GLB and A-Class lineup. The "standard" version will make 382 horsepower while the "S" variants will produce 416 hp. This means that this is going to be the most power-dense production engine in production with an impressive 208 horsepower-per-litre.

Mercedes wanted this engine to feel natural and not too extreme, which is why they've given it a linear torque curve and a high 7,200 rpm redline.

Seriously impressive stuff !

A noob question - How can such a powerful engine made so light? Are they using Titanium instead of Aluminium?

Yes, in the case of the Murray T.50 I was talking specifically about Naturally Aspirated engines.

Yep! Interestingly enough, I think it was the AMG powerplant from the CLA45 / GLA45 that was the previous leader for the turbocharged specific output ranking.
