According to a media report, Tesla has reported a record number of deliveries during the last quarter. 95,200 cars were delivered during the second quarter of 2019. Out of these, the Model 3 accounted for 77,550 units. Tesla is also reported to have received more orders than the number of cars it delivered. The carmaker's stock rose by 7%.



In comparison, Tesla delivered 40,740 cars during the same quarter last year and 63,000 cars in the first three months of 2019. Tesla's deliveries fell during the first quarter of the year and the carmaker attributes this to logistical issues as it began deliveries of the Model 3 globally. The company claims to have streamlined the shipping and delivery process. It is said to be in a position to increase production and deliveries further, even though other car manufacturers have started introducing electric cars of their own.

Tesla reported a loss of US$ 702 million in the first quarter of 2019. While the earnings of the second quarter are not known, the company is expected to post its first profit of 2019 in the third quarter of the year.

Congratulations to Tesla & Musk . No longer a niche manufacturer, Tesla is now entering the mainstream. To put things in perspective, that's more than what Mahindra / Toyota / Honda / Tata sell in India!

What's equally impressive is that the build quality of newer Model 3s has improved (compared to the inconsistencies earlier). A very close friend owns a Mercedes GLC & Model 3 in Boston and he prefers driving the Tesla! That's really saying something.

Will be interesting to see how Tesla sales are impacted once the big boys arrive with their electric cars. Tesla has had a heck of a first-mover advantage and it is single-handedly responsible for making EVs "cool". But every other mainstream manufacturer is adding the finishing touches to their mass market EVs too. They're coming in a big way.

EVs of big boys are eating into their own ICE sales rather than competition like Tesla. For example, Jaguar sales are down 20% in USA in June but 12% of their total sales are from I-PACE EV vs 0 in June 2018. If not for I-PACE, their ICE sales would have declined at even higher rate. Similarly, Audi sales are flat in June'19 compared to YoY. But 3.7% of their sales are from E-tron.

Another aspect is the big companies are not producing the EVs in volumes. For example, Hyundai Kona, Ioniq, Kia Niro, Soul are most popular low end EVs due to very good real world range and price. But you have to wait for almost an year in many countries despite being launched an year back. This is due to limited production and not competition.

Major companies like Toyota, Honda, Ford, etc... are still few years away from bringing mass market cars and their current plans include only 1 or 2 models for the next few years.

I don't see the big boys causing too much grief to Tesla. The reality is that Tesla is way ahead of all the big boys as far as battery tech and features like auto-pilot are concerned. The charging times, the charging infra and the overall battery efficiency for the Tesla are in a league of their own. I believe the big boys are at least 5-7 years away from catching up with Tesla of today. Where will Tesla be in terms of tech 5-7 years from now? Anybody's guess. I will be in the market for a new car in a year or so and I'm slowly but surely tilting towards a Tesla.
