Default China and Pakistan see slowdown in car sales too

In India, car sales have been on a steady decline over the past few months. It's a similar story in the neighbouring countries of Pakistan and China. The car industry is reportedly witnessing a slowdown there as well.

According to media reports, Honda has shut down its plant in Pakistan for 10 days due to increasing inventory. Indus Motor Company (IMC), which builds Toyotas in Pakistan, has also decided to stop car production for 8 days.

Car sales have tanked following rise in prices attributed to higher taxes and steep currency devaluation. It has been reported that if the trend continues, sales of both carmakers could drop under 30,000 units this fiscal year compared to over 48,000 units last year.

The Pakistan Suzuki Motor Company is yet to take decision on whether to cut production.

In China, vehicle sales have dropped more than 12% in the first half of 2019. While car sales were marginally up in June 2019, sales fell by 9.6% to 2.04 million units compared to the same period last year.

However, China's EV segment witnessed a growth of 80% compared to last year.

In 2018, 1.2 million EVs (BEV + PHEV) sold in China. In H1, 2019 EV sales continue to grow at rapid pace. 7.4% of total sales in June, 2019 are EVs in China. June EV sales in China are 1.52 lakhs while Indian total sales are 2.21 lakhs.

Here are some numbers of China EV sales:
June 2019:
EVs (BEV + PHEV): 1.52 lakhs, +80% YoY,
BEV: 1.29 lakhs, +106.7% YoY,
PHEV: 22,000, +2.2% YoY,

H1, 2019:
EVs (BEV + PHEV): 6.17 lakhs, +49.6% YoY,
BEV: 4.9 lakhs, +56.6% YoY,
PHEV: 1.26 lakhs, +26.4% YoY

Note:
BEV = Battery Electric Vehicle
PHEV = Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle

In H1, 2019 China battery companies (CATL, BYD, etc...) built new factories for 30 GWh EV battery capacity. Another 30 GWh battery capacity is expected to come online by end of 2019. So, 60 GWh battery capacity in 2019 alone. 60 GWh is equals to 1.42 million Hyundai Kona electric vehicles (42 kWh per vehicle).

Honda and Toyota selling 4,000 units per month in Pakistan is not too shabby. These two manufacturers manage around 12,000 to 16,000 units per month in India, which has 7x larger population and 10x larger GDP.

Lots of familiar cars in a typical Karachi/Islamabad business district traffic pic:

I don't think Pakistan or places like Bangladesh should be included in studies for car sales numbers.

A major portion of their car market is of imported used cars from Japan or other markets. Using such imports also removed the taboo or status symbol issue of brand new car demand.

Thanks to YouTube, one can get access to PAK automobile news or reviews & immediately you can see the picture where they find it viable option to spend same amount of money on a higher segment, better equipped used import over similarly priced Wagon R or Celerio (they call it Cultus) type options.

This report about sales numbers doesn't include such but historically people are spending there on used cars way more than new domestically produced products.

As Smartcat mentioned, Honda and Toyota have a very good market share in a three player market there. (Suzuki is the other player) . I am surprised at the following two.
1. Civic and Altis do a very volume and are quite common. (Unlike India where the total D1 segment size is around 600 cars per month) Remember these are not imports.
2. One will be wowed by the roads of Lahore. It looks like a developed country. ( Almost). I am not sure if the other major cities are also like this.

Yeah, major Pakistani cities seem to have wide tree-lined well-lit roads. Their expressway infrastructure is well-developed too.

www.skyscrapercity.com is the best website for street views (user submitted) of any city road or highway network in the world. You can just do a google search for 'countryname skyscrapercity' or 'cityname skyscrapercity'
