McLaren is developing a new open-cockpit speedster

The as-yet-unnamed machine will be the first pure open road car McLaren has made, with styling that will reportedly evoke open-top sports prototype racers. That will pitch it into competition with Ferrari’s recently revealed Monza SP1 and SP2 speedster models.

Power is tipped to come from McLaren’s 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbocharged petrol engine and, unlike the 1036bhp Speedtail, won’t include any electrification or other hybrid technology. The output for the car is not yet known, although the focus on road driving pleasure suggests it will be slightly reduced from the 789bhp of the Senna. However, as part of McLaren’s Ultimate Series line-up, it is still likely to be elevated from other models in the firm’s range.

Re: McLaren is developing a new open-cockpit speedster

McLaren’s latest Ultimate Series model pays a nod to its past. Dubbed the Elva, the open-topped supercar shares its name and design inspiration with the McLaren-Elva M1A of the 1960s.

With a starting price of $1,690,000 and a 399-unit production limit, the latest McLaren Ultimate Series model’s cost of entry and rarity is as jaw-dropping as its design and performance.

McLaren claims the rear-wheel-drive Elva is the lightest road car it has ever produced. Powered by the firm’s 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, it is able to reach 62mph in “under three seconds” and has a claimed 0-124mph time of 6.7sec – faster than the track-focused Senna.

To shield occupants from the elements, McLaren has developed an Active Air Management System (AAMS). Automatically activated at speed, this guides air through a large inlet in the splitter at the front of the Elva’s distinctive low nose and out of a clamshell ahead of the cabin. As a result, the air is channelled up and over the occupants to create a ‘bubble’ of calm. A small carbonfibre deflector rises from the front of the bonnet when the AAMS is active to direct the air, which is deflected through a number of carbonfibre vanes across the bonnet.

When not active at low speeds, the air flow is diverted into two low-temperature radiators to boost their efficiency. McLaren claims the radiators boost the output of the engine by cooling the oil in the seven-speed transmission. The firm says the AAMS tech means helmets are not required but can be worn if preferred, while a fixed windscreen will be offered as a factory option.

As well as the open front, McLaren has made the cabin as open to the elements as possible with low sides and by minimising the size of the twin rear buttresses by the use of an automatically deploying roll-over protection system.

The car has a number of features designed to maximise aerodynamic efficiency, including air intakes on the rear buttresses and an active rear spoiler. The latter works in conjunction with an extreme rear diffuser, which features vertical fences designed to accelerate air out from under the Elva’s flat floor.

I'm sure it will have pop-out roll over bars. But no winshield? Now, that will be a hair raising experience !

McLaren's newest supercar, the Elva roadster, has no windshield, roof or windows

McLaren ELVA - McLaren's newest supercar, the $1.69 million Elva roadster, has no windshield, roof or windows.

The new McLaren Elva supercar costs $1.7 million. not including options like a sound system or exposed carbon fiber body panels. It is designed to provide a pure roadster experience. There's no stereo as standard equipement and no roof available at all.

The Elva isn't a convertible. It's an open-topped roadster, meaning it has, literally, zero roof of any kind.

You can pay a little extra to get a windshield if you want. (It will be legally required to get one in some US states, McLaren said.)

To help keep the wind out of your face, the Elva's Active Air Management System deploys when the car is driven at faster than suburban street speeds, roughly 25 miles per hour. The system directs air around the cabin to create what it calls a "bubble of calm" for those inside. Air is channeled through the car's nose — or front end — and sent out in a high-velocity sheet, just ahead of the cockpit. This air acts like a windshield, forcing oncoming air around the cockpit. A small carbon fiber wind deflector also rises up at the front of the car, further directing the air around the cabin.

Only 399 Elvas will be made, with the first expected to be delivered near the end of 2020.

In the event the car flips over in a crash, occupants will be protected by an automatic rollover protection system. McLaren did not describe it but, in other cars, rollover protection systems involve strong metal rollbars that deploy from behind the passenger compartment the moment sensors detect the car is about to tip over.

The Elva, powered by an 804-horsepower turbocharged V8 engine mounted just behind the seats, can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in under three seconds.

The Elva is modeled on the McLaren-Elva racecar of the mid-1960s. That car was originally created by McLaren but, after some initial racing success with early models, manufacturing was taken over by Elva Cars Ltd. In 1966 Road & Track magazine called the McLaren-Elva "the fastest car we've ever tested (and) an example of the latest thinking in sports/racing cars."

That same year, Elvis Presley drove one in the musical racing movie "Spinout." Like the latest version, the McLaren-Elva was an open-topped car. It was powered by a 340 horsepower Oldsmobile V8 engine that was also mounted behind the

A system is developed by the Mclaren called the Active Air Management System (or AAMS).

The system creates a channel that goes through the nose of the car and out of the hood. The goal is to direct air up above the cabin to develop a sort of virtual windshield.

It works by guiding high speed air over the open cabin, creating calm around driver and passenger. It means you get the full adrenaline rush, undistracted.

Re: McLaren's newest supercar, the Elva roadster, has no windshield, roof or windows

McLaren has introduced a new version of its Elva speedster, equipped with a windscreen.

McLaren's newest supercar, the Elva roadster, has no windshield, roof or windows-elva_1_f3q.jpg

The new variant is aimed at customers who prefer to have a physical screen as opposed to the barrier of air created by the standard Elva's innovative Active Air Management System (AAMS). It will also enable the Elva to be road-legal in certain US states.

McLaren claims the new Elva variant weighs just 20kg more than the standard car, despite the introduction of automatic wipers, windscreen heating element, sun visors and windscreen washers. That's largely because the windscreen's frame is made from carbonfibre and the speedster's AAMS system has been removed

McLaren previously announced that it will produce just 249 examples of the ultra-exclusive Elva speedster, down from an initially planned 399 units, and has now reduced the build run again to just 149 units.

Performance details are yet to be confirmed, but can be expected to closely match those of the existing Elva

Powered by the firm’s 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing 815 PS and 800 Nm torque, it is able to reach 62mph in 2.8secs and has a claimed 0-124mph time of 6.7sec – faster than the track-focused Senna

McLaren claims the rear-wheel-drive Elva is the lightest road car it has ever produced.
