This is the inspiration for the new 4 series, I guess.

The BMW Garmisch is a classic concept car of 1970, rebuilt by BMW in 2019.

One of Italy's most influential car designers: The BMW Garmisch, designed by Marcello Gandini for Bertone vanished after its debut in 1970.

Many Luxury brands are fast loosing their exclusivity as the mass market brands are gradually catching up with them in terms of features, tech, and premiumness quotient, so to defend their territory, to standout and maintain their exclusivity they are adopting polarizing design trends. It may fail or succeed but I think it is a conscious and well thought decision made by the company.

Though from the mass market brands, two such examples are:

The all new Creta, with competitors slowly entering into its segment and catching up, apart from offering great package Hyundai also needs to stand out in terms of design to protect its turf.

Pre-facelift Nexon, being late to the party and having to fight with tough contenders, just a VFM package wont help, so Tata adopted a design which stands out and makes impact. After the Nexon established itself, they toned down few quirks and made it a more mature design.

Interestingly, Creta started with a conservative design and moved to quirky design in its latest iteration, while Nexon started with a quirky design and moved towards conservative design in it s latest iteration.

The new super sized kidney grille tends to polarise the viewer in terms of whether it appeals or whether it is just plain tasteless OTT bling. I subscribe to the latter view.
The beautiful understated BMW’s of the 1960’s, 1970’s, 1980’s, 1990’s and early 2000’s are fine.
This kind of overstated design cue as in these latest BMW’s can only appeal to the nouveau riche for whom appearance means everything.

The range consists of 420i petrol versions (2.0 of 184 hp and 30.6 kgfm), 430i (also 2.0, but with 258 hp and 40.8 kgfm) and the 440i xDrive (3.0, six cylinders, 374 hp and 50.1 kgfm), the most powerful until the arrival of the M4.
