According to a media report, the next-generation Toyota Mirai will be unveiled in 2020.

The report suggests that Toyota believes that the price of fuel cell cars will be the same as that of hybrids in around 10 years. The third generation of the Mirai could be comparable to hybrids.

The Mirai, which is Toyota's first fuel cell car, was launched in 2014. The car comes with a total hydrogen tank capacity of 5 kg and has an EPA-approved range of 502 km. The electric motor in the car produces 150 BHP and 335 Nm.

Toyota is also testing a fuel cell variant of the Lexus LS. The LS could become Toyota's second fuel cell vehicle.

Obviously there has to be a correlation between highest selling brand and worst designs imaginable, I quite don't get it though.

Gotta hand it to Toyota still, they are anything but predictable when it comes to shapes and forms. Hideous proportions and bodylines on the Mirai though.

A possible reason for these quirky designs is because cars like these (Prius/Honda Insight etc) are geared towards people who are more "eco"-conscious and hate normal ICE cars and regular designs (think California hippies).

Personally I do wish they aim towards mainstream looks so that people have one less reason to reject these cars. I feel Hydrogen cars are the future for India, given the lack of space in our country (especially urban areas) for EV charging infrastructure. Whereas hydrogen could replace petrol/diesel at the pumps.

Toyota's new Mirai:

Quote:
Toyota's first hydrogen fuel (FCV) model is the first full model change of the new Mirai, but by adopting an improved version of the TNGA-L platform, the body size is increased while the ride quality and rigidity are improved. It can be said that this is a car of the future, with improved practicality compared to its predecessor, such as an improved hydrogen fuel tank.
Quote:
with a total length of 4,975 mm × total width of 1,885 mm × total height of 1,470 mm , respectively + 85 mm / + 70 mm / -65 mm , in order to improve the platform and expand the interior space Changed to a 5-door coupe-style body.

The seating capacity has been increased from 4 to 5 to improve practicality, and the rear armrests are equipped according to the grade to improve comfort.
Quote:
The one-letter type rear tail lamp is the same system as the new Harrier, but when combined with a wide feeling and a solid form, it has a somewhat Audi feeling and is unique.

The top roof is also equipped with a panoramic glass roof, so I think it looks more like a two-tone color and looks cooler.

Toyota Mirai gets 5 star rating in Euro NCAP tests.

Quote:
Toyota’s Mirai is amongst the first cars to use a hydrogen fuel cell to produce the electricity needed to drive the electric motor. With a high-pressure tank storing the hydrogen, safety is of paramount importance and the latest generation Mirai ensures this with a top five-star rating. Understanding that some consumers may be apprehensive about the technology,

Euro NCAP paid extra attention to the crash and post-crash safety of the Mirai but found that the fact that it’s powered by hydrogen had no effect on its inherent safety.

This Toyota Mirai 1:10 Scale RC Car Actually Runs On Hydrogen, Unfortunately, no one can buy one.

Quote:
this mini Toyota Mirai runs on an equally small hydrogen fuel cell. Toyota turned to UK-based tech company Bramble Energy for a miniature fuel cell, a project which the company says was a challenge. Basically, a miniaturized version of Bramble Energy's printed circuit board fuel cell system was created with the idea of fitting it into a 1:10 scale radio control chassis. Two small hydrogen tanks that resemble AA batteries are installed on either side of the board, feeding the hydrogen manifold in front.
Quote:
It's all mounted into a 1:10 scale chassis from Tamiya, the other partner Toyota called upon for this experiment.
