According to a media report, the next-generation Mercedes-AMG C63 will get a four-cylinder hybrid engine instead of a V8 engine.



The engine is said to be an electrified version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre M139 engine that powers the A45 AMG. In the A45, it produces 416 BHP and 500 Nm. The engine is expected to get a 48V mild-hybrid system and it could develop 503 BHP and 750 Nm. The engine could be paired to a 9-speed automatic gearbox and an all-wheel drive system. The weight of this hybrid power plant is said to be less than the V8 engine that powers the current C63.

The electrified powertrain is also expected to power other AMG cars like the C43 and the GLC 63. The next-gen C63 AMG is expected to be launched in 2022.

Sacrilege! What is an AMG 63 without a V8? The full fat AMG-s were always associated with bawdy hairy chested V8-s. I can understand them downsizing the AMG 45 which has V6-s, but replacing the iconic V8 is sad. It's like emasculating a prized stud bull. This news makes me depressed and want to give up on the car industry all together judging by the way things are going. A black day for AMG afficinados.

Be thankful it has 4 cylinders left

The way other companies like Volvo, Porsche and Audi are moving, the next gen AMGs will not even have engines. Most of them will run on electricity. And Mercedes may start recording the engine sounds of present gen AMGs and will play them through the speakers in the next gen models.

Mercedes have confirmed that the next AMG C63 will have a 2.0 L four cylinder engine, ditching the 4.0L V8 being used now. The four cylinder engine in question is the one currently powering the AMG A45 S, with 421 PS. In the C63, however, it is likely to be accompanied by hybridisation to increase the power output to about 500 PS
While this is sure to irritate fans, the German brand has said that the new model will offer superior performance.

But 2.0l and 4 cylinders sound so lame! Also worse would be the sound for sure. Nothing can beat a glorious V8 or a V10.

Wait till you drive this beast, then maybe you will forget that there is a 4 cylinder under the hood and no longer the 'Glorious V8'. The only difference will be with the exhaust note, which is no more exciting and the refinement, which has gone a few steps north.

The next-gen Mercedes-AMG C63 which will make the landmark switch from V8 to four-cylinder hybrid power, has been revealed in concept form ahead of a full production-spec reveal in the coming months.

Mercedes has confirmed that the petrol unit has been tuned to give 470bhp in its own right for the new C63 - making it comfortably the most powerful four-cylinder engine in series production. It will then be paired with a 201bhp EV motor on the rear axle – a set-up Mercedes refers to as the 'P1' drivetrain – to give a total figure of 670bhp, some 167bhp more than the BMW M3, its closest rival.

The most sacrilegious thing about this car is its weight. 2.1 Tons for a c class is a just too much. I remember when the previous gen Jag XJ a full size car 2 classes above was 1900 kg. Its like 400kgs heavier than an M3 which itself is a porker these days. Also this exact same ICE engine minus the 300 plus kg weight penalty can be had in the C43 amg. Does an AMG = Battery pack plus e motor now?

Not having a V8 and the car still getting the 63S badge doesn’t sit well with me as well. But remember 680hp and 1020Nm are some serious numbers which are much higher than the M3 / M3 Touring.

Power to weight ratio and 0-100 figures say something about the car.



PS: My choice will still be a M3 though!

Looks like a million bucks! How I wish Mercedes increased the size of the rear fenders.

680 HP/1020 nm must be a hoot to drive. I had the opportunity of test driving the A 45S AMG which uses the same 2 ltr turbo charged engine and it just blew my mind. This one must be at another level altogether.

Inline 4 and an electric motor to still maintain the bump in horses. Looks like this is the way forward for Mercedes Benz on all its AMGs.

However, where's the fun quotient? Adding artificial engine noise through speakers is definitely not what one's looking for. Fake quad pipes.

Don't be flattered by the pictures you see right now released by Media. It has all the options loaded on the car viz - Black package, performance package, Carbon fiber package, 20'' Alloys, Wider diffuser etc. But then what's on the stock car?

0-100 even a Tesla is fast. What about the Mid and Top?

But those numbers don't make any difference, the 503 hp M3 competition is equally fast and lighter (so I assume it would be more agile too). Also, the BMW will definitely sound far better.

The Mercedes models are getting really difficult to tell apart even to the eagle eyed. This looks so similar to the E63.

It'll be interesting to see what the reviews say about the new powertrain. I wouldn't be surprised if it's better than the V8s.
