Toyota is planning to showcase an ultra-compact two-seater electric vehicle at the Future Expo special exhibition of the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.



Toyota claims that the car has been designed for those who use their cars regularly for short distance trips. The car has a claimed range of around 100 km and a top speed of 60 km/h. The carmaker also claims that the car has an extremely short turning radius.

The car has 2 doors, 5-pod LED headlamps, ORVMs with turn-indicators and vertically stacked tail lamp clusters. Images released by the company suggest that the car rides on steel wheels and gets a digital instrument cluster. The car's charging port is located at the front, between the headlamp clusters.



Toyota is also looking to re-use batteries in used cars as well as in non-automobile applications.

Looks like Toyota's take on the 'Smart Fortwo' formula.

However - an electric version might make a lot of sense for the short city applications this car is designed for, as compared to the small petrol engines employed in the Smart.

This is Toyota’s take on a strictly urban ultra-compact supermini similar to Daimler’s Smart ForTwo - I am really interested in the structural rigidity of the car as the Smart ForTwo with its build quality and rigid Tridion safety cell has a kerb weight of 880 kgs despite being just 2.7m long and 2.66m wide! That’s similar to the much larger Swift and Baleno! Going electric makes sense due to the urban only positioning and the Smart ForTwo has now become exclusively electric and being rebranded as Smart EQ ForTwo in line with Mercedes Benz’s EQ nomenclature for its electric vehicles. I really hope this makes it to India but with decent safety & structural rigidity given that it’ll be bullied mercilessly one our roads and will get scant respect!
