Mazda begins production of MX-30, its first pure EV

On the 19th May 2020, Mazda began production of the all-new Mazda MX-30, the company's first all-electric vehicle, at Ujina plant No. 1 in Hiroshima, Japan.

MX-30 comes equipped with e-Skyactiv electric drivetrain technology, it is powered by 35.5kWh lithium-ion battery which gives a range of 200km according to WLTP cycle. The battery supports DC fast-charging up to 50 kW, with which it can be charged to 80 per cent in 30 to 40 minutes. It is a front wheel drive vehicle, driven by AC synchronous electric motor which produces 107kW(145PS) power. Mazda says that the battery was sized to strike optimum balance between the driving range and CO2 emissions from LCA(Life Cycle Assessment) perspective.

MX-30 design is based on the company's new award winning Kodo design philosophy. One of the design highlights of the car is centre-pillarless freestyle doors. Interior features a driver-centric cockpit with a floating infotainment system, a seven inch touch screen panel to control air-conditioner. Also Mazda used a range of environment friendly materials in the car's interior like cork, fabric made with fibres from recycled plastic bottles.

The car is expected to arrive at European dealerships by this autumn and is now available for pre-orders.

MAZDA's MX-30 scores high in EURO NCAP tests - gets 5 star rating!

Quote:
Mazda joins the growing list of debutant EVs with its new electric MX-30. Naturally, the CX-30 based MX-30 is heavier than its combustion-engined sister, but still delivers an impressive 91 percent for adult occupant protection, thanks to its compatible front-end structure and new far-side restraints.

Re: Mazda's first mass-produced electric car, the MX-30

Mazda unveils MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV with rotary engine for power generation for the first time.

Mazda unveiled the MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV, a plug-in hybrid model that uses a rotary engine as a generator, at the Brussels Motor Show.

The MX-30, which was introduced in 2020 as Mazda's first mass-produced BEV (battery electric vehicle), has led Mazda's electrification by offering mild hybrid models for select markets. With the concept of "living like me", this car provides creative time and experience with pure and comfortable driving, a design that feels familiar, and a well-equipped interior space made of warm materials.

The MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV released this time is a series PHEV (plug-in hybrid) model that expands its use as a battery EV while maintaining the basic value provided by the MX-30, and has an EV range of 85km that can be used as a battery EV in a wide range of daily scenes, and supports even longer driving by generating electricity. Furthermore, the entire running is driven by a motor.

The newly developed rotary engine for power generation (engine type: 8C) is mounted in the motor room coaxially with the high-output motor and generator, taking advantage of the characteristics of the rotary engine that can achieve the required output performance in a compact manner. The compact electric drive unit, combined with a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery and a 50-liter fuel tank, creates a unique series plug-in hybrid system.

In addition, it supports the user's active car life with a charging function that supports both normal and rapid methods, a 1500W power supply function, and three driving modes of "EV mode", "normal mode", and "charge mode" that can be selected according to the usage scene.

In addition, the MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV is available with a special edition "Edition R". While the exterior and interior colors are based on black, Malone Rouge Metallic, which is a reprint of the roof color of Mazda's first passenger car, the R360 Coupe, is used as an insertion color, and the floor mats and seat headrests are specially designed with badges and embossing that mimic the shape of the rotor.

What surprises me is why has Mazda not ventured into Indian market yet?
It would be good to drive their cars on Indian roads.

Exactly, they have good cars which is suited for India. I think it's too late now. Would have worked in the 90's with the sizeable Middle east workforce having exposure to the Mazda brand there. Mazda would have been a success I think, lost opportunity. Right now with electrification on the rise, many brands like Honda, Skoda, Jeep, Nissan all will have to exit India with the way the things are happening.
