Outright punch at the top of the rev range, above 4000 RPM and beyond, is where you can perhaps tell the difference, and the manual transmission made shifting gears a slower process than the DSG. But 80% of the time you will not feel the need for that little extra grunt.

In my opinion, the DSG bridges that gap to 90% just because it shifts so quickly and seamlessly, and the new gearbox will probably be even better and more reliable, hopefully.

If you really need more grunt, you could always unlock some of its reserves by applying a new map. A simple flash will liberate at least 30 bhp, if not more, and with that you can match/breach the power figures of the old stock car for the price of an annual service at your Skoda service center.

It most certainly will..

..in the vRS trim level.

Skoda was surprised by the demand for the vRS model and all copies of the vRS of the event generation Octavia were spoken for in no time.

The vRS 245 may come in very limited numbers as a CBU, but the with new generation vRS I really don't think Skoda will hold back by bringing limited copies.

Personally I think it's inaccurate news. Skoda CZ will first have to deal with massive demand for the Octavia IV across the EU & UK, and then only start SKD deliveries to IN, AU etc.

A more realistic timeline is Diwali or Christmas 2020. Also factor in that Skoda IN has an ambitious launch timetable for the BS-VI versions of the (facelifted) Superb, Kodiaq, Rapid etc, along with the CBU Karoq.

The new Octavia vRS PHEV will use the same 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine as the recently launched Golf GTE.

expect the petrol version to develop in excess of 245bhp – more than the output of the vRS 245 that was sold in the second half of the Mk3 Octavia’s life.

Assuming that the 1.4 TSI engine produces the same 148bhp as it does in the Golf GTE, that would leave around 100bhp to be developed by the electric motor, which will be sited, as usual, between the car’s engine and gearbox.

The total system torque is expected to be around 400Nm – enough to get the car (which will have a dual-clutch automatic gearbox and no manual option) from 0-62mph in about seven seconds

I don't get it. The next Golf GTI and R will continue to have a 2.0l turbocharged petrol, while the cars will get a boring 1.4l Petrol-Hybrid? It's probably to early to judge, but this is a stupid decision by Skoda.

I think the decision will probably propel, potential Octavia vRS to go for the RS245 version, rather than wait for the new one, which I frankly think would be a good decision.

If you read the article it mentions this vRS PHEV would be sold alongside the EA888 2.0L motor which would be producing more than the current 245ps and the PHEV would make around 245bhp..
