2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV Is The Most Powerful And Fuel-Efficient RAV4 Ever -
Zero to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds !

Toyota has used the Los Angeles Auto Show to introduce the 2021 RAV4 Prime.

Set to go on sale next summer, the RAV4 Prime takes everything that was good about the standard model and improves it. As a result, the crossover is the most powerful, most fuel-efficient and quickest RAV4 ever created.











Fast and frugal

Like the RAV4 Hybrid, the RAV4 Prime has an electronically controlled all-wheel drive system which uses a rear-mounted motor to power the rear wheels. Toyota didn’t say how powerful the motor is, but the RAV4 Prime has a combined output of 302 HP (225 kW / 306 PS). That’s 83 hp (62 kW / 84 PS) more than the RAV4 Hybrid, and the extra power enables the crossover to run from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in just 5.8 seconds.

The impressive numbers don’t end there, as the RAV4 Prime has an estimated electric-only range of 39 miles (63 km). Toyota says that’s the longest range of any PHEV crossover on the market and it’s only 8 miles (13 km) less than the Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid. Furthermore, the model has an estimated combined fuel economy rating of 90 MPGe.


Last but not least, there are paddle shifters which are a first for the RAV4. While they typically feel gimmicky in crossovers, Toyota said drivers can downshift to increase regenerative braking.

The SE and XSE come equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense suite of driver assist systems. It includes automatic high beam headlights, adaptive cruise control and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection. The suite also features lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist (lane centering) and road sign assist.

The new RAV4 is a fantastic car especially the hybrid versions. It has leapfrogged the competition so much so that here in Australia it is only few sales away from becoming the best selling car bar none. More than the best selling Ford Ranger pick up and within a spitting distance of Toyota HiLux the best selling car in Australia. The hybrid powertrain with more than 200 bhp is rated 4.7l/100 kms. People have been able to get more around 5l/100 in normal city driving! Thats 20 kmpl for what is a midsize SUV in India!

Doesn't take away from my appreciation of the vehicle, though. Very nice. But for me, please, not in black.

A plug in hybrid with 10 years of battery guarantee. That should probably get you through to the time when electric charging infrastructure and battery technology is matured. I feel this is a very sensible proposition from Toyota. This can act as a the stop gap. You get the initial torque of a pure electric car and not have range anxiety. I think the rich should prefer this to the pure electric counterparts. Because this is comprehensively superior to pure combustion engine based cars, unlike electric cars that still lags when it comes to long distance running and range anxiety.

The more I read about PHEVs the more I am convinced that full system hybrids and PHEVs are the definitive way forward. The more policy and manufacturers can align to facilitate this at affordable the better it would be.

Disappointed at early rumblings (although these are at best rumours I suppose) that Toyota would bring this via the CBU route. Given their muscle in India, they should be backing themselves to give the Camry Hybrid and RAV4 PHEV mainstream status in the luxury / semi luxury segment in India.

To my mind, the “value luxury” proposition that VAG wants to pursue, if you layer Toyota’s brand equity to that theme, it is Toyota that should be the default alternative to the big Germans operating just under the pricing radar of their overpriced sedans and SUVs (despite the Toyota being somewhat overpriced itself).

Have little hope from Toyota per se but if they could bring this vehicle at a landed on road price under 50 lakh I think it will find its own set of takers just as the Camry has its own fan following.

The world's best-selling car gets a new GR Sport trim to make it look like it can play sports SUVs. The Toyota Rav-4 GR Sport will arrive in early 2023.

This RAV-4 GR Sport does not muscle its mechanics. The model is offered with the simple hybrid powertrain and AWD-i all-wheel drive, which delivers 222 hp. As on the other models badged GR Sport, the Rav4 is equipped with firmed suspensions. But do not count on him for real sports walks: mechanically, he will not change one iota. The customer will always have the choice between the two hybrid engines, one rechargeable the other not.
