Looks like this time Mercedes will launch the Maybach version of the next gen S Class immediately after the launch of the standard car.

The Maybach S Class has seen tremendous success. After the launch of the Maybach S Class range, they have sold 1 Maybach for every 7 normal S Class sedans.

At 5469mm long, the Maybach S-Class is a full 18cm longer than even the long-wheelbase version of the standard Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The firm claims this increase “entirely benefits the rear”, making it ideal for high-end chauffeurs.

Optionally available is a two-tone paint finish (as pictured). The Maybach S-Class will be offered with two engines in the UK at launch: the 496bhp 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 from the S580 and a 603bhp 6.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V12, set to be badged as the S650. Other markets will receive a plug-in hybrid using a 3.0-litre six-pot turbo petrol engine and a gearbox-mounted electric motor for a combined 503bhp. Air suspension is standard, along with Mercedes’ road surface-scanning E-Active body control tech. Rear-wheel steering is optionally available

I was reading about the new maybach s class online and came across a piece saying it has 18 airbags. I've heard of at max. 9 airbags in a car, now I really want to know how and where has MB managed to fit 18 airbags.

Oh yes, this is true. It has something to do with belt bags and Pre-safe Impulse Side

Source: Daimler’s Website: If an imminent side collision is detected, it moves the occupant as far away as possible from the acute danger zone before impact.

Unlike in the case of a frontal collision, there is only a limited crumple zone available in the event of a side impact. To increase the size of this zone, the new PRE-SAFE® impulse side function moves the occupant in the danger zone away from the door and towards the centre of the vehicle just before an imminent side impact. To do this, the system inflates the air chambers in the side bolsters of the backrest within a fraction of a second when an imminent side impact is detected. This impulse can move the occupant to the side, away from the acute danger area and towards the vehicle centre, thus increasing the distance between occupant and door. At the same time, the impulse is imparted moderately to the occupant, lessening the forces acting on them during the side impact. This can substantially lessen the load exerted on the ribcage by the side collision and greatly reduce the risk of injury.

Source: Daimler’s Website: The Belt Bag is a combination of a seat belt and airbag. When the crash sensors detect a serious impact, the airbag control unit activates the Belt Bag. A generator at the belt armature inflates the double-layered belt, which has Velcro seams. The volume of the Belt Bag is around four litres. The developers consider the Belt Bag to deliver the greatest benefits in the rear of the car, where conventional airbags cannot be installed.

Since I’m fully not aware of this, this is all that I could find on the web. Hope someone better aware of this can explain in detail, I’m just as curious as you regarding this technology.

Here the person at the rear is royalty! The Executive seats in the rear feature all of the below safety features, including frontal airbags for the rear passenger!

• Seat cushion airbags. These counteract "submarining" under the fastened seat belt.
• Beltbags (optional equipment). The inflatable belt strap spreads the incoming forces over a wider area.
• Belt extenders (optional equipment) make seat belt fastening more convenient.
• After fastening the belt, the belt comfort adjustment sets the restraining force of the safety belt to a particularly pleasant level. Belt tensioners and force limiters are standard equipment to help reduce the loads on the occupants.
• Frontal airbags. The rear airbags for both rear occupants are a new feature.
• Sidebags are also available in the rear to provide protection in the event of a severe side crash.
• Windowbags. Located in the area of the roof frame, these cover the large head impact area of both front and rear occupants.

All-round safety on the front seats as well

The driver and front passenger each have a three-point seat belt with pyrotechnical inertia-reel tensioning and belt force limitation and, as part of the standard PRE-SAFE® system, electrically reversible reel tensioning including deselectable automatic belt adjustment. The belt is in particularly gentle contact with the occupant's body. In the event of a severe frontal impact, PRE-SAFE® Impulse can reduce the forces acting on the driver and front passenger. The system tensions the front belts at all three attachment points, restraining the occupants at an early stage.

The driver and front passenger also have front airbags, and the driver a kneebag. If the central electronic control unit detects a side crash, the windowbag and sidebag are deployed on the side of the vehicle where the impact occurs. To ascertain the lateral acceleration, the central crash sensor has support from exterior satellite sensors located at the base of the B-pillars. Pressure sensors in all four doors also help to estimate the severity of the impact.

In addition, the preventive, semi-reversible side restraint system PRE-SAFE® Impulse Side is installed as standard to protect the front occupants. Together with the familiar PRE-SAFE® protection concepts for frontal and rear collisions, PRE-SAFE® Impulse Side forms a kind of virtual crumple zone that extends all around the vehicle.

As only a limited crumple zone is available in the case of a side impact, and even before the crash, PRE-SAFE® Impulse Side can move the affected driver or front passenger away from the acute danger zone as soon as the system detects that a side collision is immediately imminent. For this purpose, air chambers in the side bolsters of the front seat backrest are inflated in fractions of a second. In addition, when a side impact with another vehicle threatens, the vehicle body can be raised by the E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension (optional) within a few tenths of a second. This directs the impact forces towards particularly resistant structures in the lower area of the vehicle During a severe side impact, the new centre airbag (available depending on country) positions itself between the driver and front passenger seat, reducing the risk of head contact. It is integrated into the driver's backrest in the middle of the vehicle. The centre airbag can be deployed as the situation demands when a severe side impact is detected.

Frontal airbags for both rear occupants for the first time

The rear airbag is an innovation by Mercedes-Benz. During severe frontal collisions, it can considerably reduce the loads acting on the heads and necks of occupants on the rear seats. The rear airbag uses an innovative concept to inflate and position the air cushion. The special tubular structure is rapidly inflated by compressed gas from a cold gas generator. The space between is filled with ambient air. The tubular structure itself has a content of approx. 16 litres. The effective volume of the space in between is up to 70 litres.

An airbag in the seat belt: the beltbag

The beltbag is an inflatable seat-belt strap that reduces the load on the ribcage in a front impact, and is thus able to reduce the risk of injury to passengers in the rear. Should the crash sensors detect a severe frontal impact, the airbag control unit triggers deployment and inflation of the beltbag. A gas generator then inflates the multi-layered belt strap with Velcro seams to nearly three times its normal width. The resulting larger surface area is able to better distribute the force acting on the seat occupant. The beltbag is used in exactly the same way as a conventional seat belt. However, this version of the belt strap differs from the standard belt and is very comfortable to wear thanks to its particularly soft edges.

An airbag for the seat: the seat cushion airbag

The airbag is located under the seat cushion upholstery, but on top of the plastic seat shell which is moved by the seat mechanisms. This means that the airbag is always in the right position relative to the occupant. Without additional measures, with the occupant in a reclined position on a flat seat cushion, there would otherwise be a danger of the pelvic area sliding beneath the belt strap (submarining) in an accident. This can be prevented by the cushionbag, as it raises the front section of the seat cushion upholstery.

Some features:

1. It's now officially the only Mercedes vehicle that is offered with a choice of 6 litre twin turbo V12 engine.

2. It's 12 inches longer than the regular S class, and 7.2 inches longer than the extended wheelbase S class.

3. The 2 tone paint job is done by hand, not by robots, and takes over a week, after the whole vehicle is painted in the colour of the lower part of the vehicle.

4. The rear doors are fully automatic, and are opened and closed at the push of buttons. These rear doors can be operated from the driver's seat too, in case the passenger isn't bothered to press a button.

5. Seat belts at the rear have a motorised extender, which brings out the seat belt to hand it over to the passenger, which has laser sensors that are always scanning the rear seats, and only extend outwards in fractions of a second once they detect a hand movement to reach for the seat belt.

6. The seat massager also has a calf area massager which is unique to Maybach only.

7. 250+ LED are installed in the roof of the cabin alone, which move along with your hand movements, and your neck movement.

8. It features a Maybach mode, that programs the accelerator to be gentle, the gears change at a lower rev so that the shifts are smoother and lesser noticeable. Another feature in the Maybach mode is the vehicle starts driving in the second gear instead of first gear directly, so that there's lesser jolting and one less gear change.

9. Hardware is capable of autonomous driving, and a software release around mid 2021 shall make it capable of doing so.

There must be dozens of other such cool features, would like other members to share such fun trivia about the Maybach, that sets the dice rolling for future technology which may appear in our everyday cars in near future.

It also has an extended rear axle steering compared to the S Class. That makes getting this car into tight spaces no big deal along with the brilliant parking aids.

This is a brilliant idea, however, I think this feature is already there on Audi A8, and I have heard of rear wheel steering in some other car reviews too.

The feature has been there on many cars, but the maximum angle is what is different and in this one its the highest ever on a passenger car. Thats what is different.

Mercedes-Maybach S680 S-Class revealed with V12 Engine.

Couple of subtle changes compared to the standard Maybach S-Class. "V12" badges adorn the front fenders and there's an "S680" logo on the trunk lid.

Ad the good news is that it's coming to India, July Production, expected launch in India around October. Starting around 3,5 Cr Plus options
