Re: Toyota Fortuner Facelift spied testing in Thailand

I hope a double barrel headlamp makes its way to the update / face-lift.

This is a SUV and a lot of people use it at places where there isn't much street light and in general, poor lightning to speak of, this should address the weakness of poor illumination right up ahead when the SUV is in high beam.

The exterior is just fine - its the interiors that need a major uplift. What they did to Camry, they need to do to the Fortuner (lexus like changes). Its hugely spacious, reliable, equipped, etc. All discs maybe.

Why double barrel? It has bi beam LED projectors already? These are known to be the best and the Fortuner lights are insanely good already.

Not really. We have few complaints on forum itself [on Fortuner Official review thread].

Plus, I believe, double barrel [with dedicated high / low] headlamp helps lightning up the road better than a single barrel lamp.

I am unsure if the single barrel has both lamps built-in and in the rendered images I do see a dual barrel. Even the new Endeavour has the dual barrel LED's now.

Allow me to explain this misconception you have. The complaints on the forum are not from the lights as such but the LED colour technology which is a little whitish than ideal. I think it's close to 5700K, but I am unsure on this. The HID lights earlier were 4300K which are perfect temperature. Older gen Fortuner had low beam HID 4300K and high beam halogens. Compared to newer ones which is all LED and most likely 5700K.

Secondly, double barrel doesn't mean better at all. Infact double barrel is not perfect as the axis of low and high is different.

The single LED projectors is best way to get the perfect beam. You design a projector with a single LED bulb (or array of bulbs). The lighting is for both low and high beam. Then you add a metal shield that is controlled by a motor. When the metal shield is closed, it blocks the light on upper side and when you go to high beam, it opens the shield.

This is not like H4 that has 2 filaments.

Regarding the Endeavour, it is not double barrel as in projectors. It has a low beam LED projector and high beam LED reflector which you can say is double barrel but it's not as good in technology than the Fortuner's bi beam LED.

I haven't seen the new Endeavour lighting but it might be good if it has a lower colour temperature.

My guess is the Fortuner and Endeavour will be similar.

Also all these LED's are not that great in the rain.

I hope Toyota doesn't screw up the looks of the Fortuner.

The pictures shared in the link look a Tata Sumo Grand Face Lift

Still no signs of sunroof, not sure why it is taking so much time for Toyota to provide sunroof across its range. While I agree it is not the only thing to look in car but considering how other car manufacturers are providing features in much lower segments Toyota seems to be way behind them.

Firstly thanks for the info. I now have a little better understanding of the headlamp setups

But trying to understand on the effect of different axis. What I want to know is, that even with different axis, how is double barrel inherently inferior.

Isn't it all about the calibration and design. I mean if the individual high and low beam barrels are calibrated and designed correctly then they should be at par with a proper single barrel setup.

Yes that's correct it's all about the design and calibration. The example I mentioned was the Endeavour, which has low beam projectors and high beam halogens using reflectors.

The new Endeavour changes that to reflectors using LED's which is better but still not as good a projector setup.

If they had dual projectors then yes it would be very good but till then bi beam projectors are the best vs this projector+reflector which cars are having.

Is it only me or Toyota seems to have taken some design inspirations from Kia here?
