2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid arrives in America with 194 HP.

Designed to be affordable and fuel-efficient, the Corolla Cross Hybrid will be built at the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Alabama, and go on sale in the United States later this year.

Toyota didn’t release many specifications but confirmed the model will have a fifth-generation hybrid system as well as standard all-wheel drive. That isn’t much to go on, but the crossover will have a combined output of 194 hp (145 kW / 197 PS) and that’s 25 hp (19 kW / 25 PS) more than the standard model.

This will enable the Corolla Cross Hybrid to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 8.0 seconds and return an estimated 37 mpg combined. The latter number is 7 mpg better than all-wheel-drive versions of the Corolla Cross as well as 5 mpg better than front-wheel-drive variants

Full details will be announced closer to launch, but the Corolla Cross Hybrid will be offered in five different trims including the familiar LE and XLE grades. They’re being joined by new S, SE, and XSE trims that feature sportier styling and a sport-tuned suspension

Toyota is considering a pickup truck based on the Corolla Cross, project awaiting the green light.

Toyota has been reading between the lines and has been giving customers exactly what they seem to need: crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks, in a market where the Corolla nameplate is still alive and kicking. Now they are reportedly planning a pickup based on the Corolla Cross.

Toyota launched the Corolla Cross sub-compact crossover in June 2020, as a response to the ever-growing demand for high rides. And apparently, they nailed it. The Japanese sold 56,666 examples last year, which means 49,463 units more than in 2021, the model's first full year on the market.

Built on the GA-C architecture, the model is powered by a 2.0-liter engine that delivers 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels via a Direct-Shift CVT transmission. The all-wheel drive version comes for extra money. And that is the exact powertrain that an entry-level pickup truck would receive if Toyota actually builds it before electrification takes over.

But before the Corolla Cross-based pickup truck shows up, Toyota gets busy. This week, they have revealed the 2024 Land Cruiser, the company's longest nameplate. Next year, they will also reveal the Crown-based crossover.

2024 Toyota Corolla Cross facelift – 1.8L petrol, hybrid; digital dash, EPB, wireless CarPlay, Android Auto.

Four variants comprised of one ICE version and three hybrids emerge at the facelift’s debut; 1.8L Sport Plus at 999,000 THB (RM133,093), HEV Premium at 1,094,000 THB (RM145,749), HEV Premium Luxury at 1,204,000 THB (RM160,404) and the HEV GR Sport at 1,254,000 THB (RM167,065).









Visual updates bring the popular Asean-market SUV closer to the Corolla Cross sold in other markets, and changes include redesigned full-LED headlamps as seen on the Japanese– and European-market models.

new headlamp design from versions of the Corolla Cross sold in other markets bring sequential indicators, while further exterior equipment highlights include the panoramic sunroof and kick-sensing powered tailgate. Tail lamps are also LED units of a new design.

Rolling stock for the HEV Premium variant upwards is a set of 18-inch, two-tone finish alloy wheels shod with 225/50R18 tyres, while the GR Sport gets tyres of similar dimensions, on alloy wheels of a different design.

Building upon its TNGA base, the facelifted Corolla Cross continues to feature a 1.8 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine in conventional ICE form, and also as part of a hybrid powertrain.

These continue to be the 2ZR-FBE 1.8 litre unit with 140 hp/177 Nm for the ICE version that is for the base 1.8 Sport Plus variant, and the 2ZR-FXE 1.8 litre unit with 122 hp for the other three hybrid-powered variants comprised of 98 hp and 142 Nm from the Atkinson-cycle combustion engine and 72 hp/163 Nm from the electric drive motor.

For active safety kit, the base 1.8 Sport Plus variant gains blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert (RCTA), while the HEV Luxury variant get the Toyota Safety Sense suite of systems comprised of pre-collision AEB, all-speed dynamic radar cruise control with stop and go, lane departure warning, lane tracing assist and auto high beam. The HEV Premium Luxury and HEV GR Sport gain parking support brake functionality.

Further active safety equipment includes stability control, traction control, ABS, EBD, brake assist, hill start assist and tyre pressure monitoring, and passive safety kit in the form of seven airbags.
