2023 Volkswagen Passat to be larger and gain EV version.




Volkswagen has given the ninth-generation Passat a definitive go-ahead after more than a year of internal debate over the future of the German saloon and estate.

in 2023, the new Passat will share its platform, drivetrains and electrical architecture with the Skoda Superb – alongside which right-hand-drive versions will be produced in a new greenfield factory to be established by Skoda as part of a major expansion of its production capacity.

The new Passat will be unified in design, meaning it will be the same car all over the world.

The decision to push ahead with the Passat will also end Volkswagen’s strategy of offering two different versions of the mid-sized model.

Currently, European versions are based on the MQB platform, while the Passat sold in the US and through one sales channel in China continues to be based on the old PQ46 platform, which dates back to the sixth-generation model introduced in 2005

From 2023, however, all Passats will be underpinned by an updated version of the MQB platform used by today’s model and supporting both front- and four-wheel drive. It’s claimed to provide scope for not only an increased number of mild and plug-in petrol and diesel hybrids but also the packaging of a fully electric drivetrain.

The styling of the new model, known internally as the B9, has already been completed, say Volkswagen insiders. They suggest it will take on an even more versatile role, with accommodation and load-carrying ability high
priorities.

2022 Volkswagen Passat facelift for China makes early debut.

For the 2022 model year, VW is giving the Passat a facelift in the world's most populous country. Revealing images of the sedan's mid-cycle update have been published by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology after the car recently received the stamp of approval from the government. It gets a glitzy front grille with honeycomb-shaped chrome inserts, along with updated LED headlights and a cleaner front bumper design.

The most obvious change is at the back where China's Passat gains a full-width light bar, although we're not entirely sure whether that actually lights up or it's there just for décor. Those ghastly faux exhausts are sadly still there, as is the "280 TSI" badging reserved for the entry-level 1.4-liter powertrain sold alongside the 330 TSI and 380 TSI 2.0-liter models. All three are DSG-only affairs.

Eventually the Passat will share the same production line as the next-generation Skoda Superb, which is being developed alongside it. VW’s family car has been moved from its traditional home at Emden in Germany to make way for the ID.4 SUV and production versions of the ID. Vizzion saloon and ID. Space Vizzion estate concepts.

Passat will continue with TDI options. The latest version of the brand’s 2.0 TDI turbocharged unit will slot under the bonnet, in states of tune ranging from 148bhp to 197bhp, while 4MOTION all-wheel drive will also be available.

Petrol power will play second fiddle, but will be an important bridge towards an expanded plug-in hybrid offering, with two options anticipated.
