Hyundai, Kia recall vehicles for leaks that can cause fires - Indian Santa Fe might be affected

The recalls cover more than 440,000 Kia Optima midsize sedans from 2013 through 2015 and Kia Sorento SUVs from 2014 and 2015. Also covered are 151,000 Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs from 2013 to 2015.

DETROIT: Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia are recalling over 591,000 vehicles in the U.S. to fix a brake fluid leak that could cause engine fires.

The recalls cover more than 440,000 Kia Optima midsize sedans from 2013 through 2015 and Kia Sorento SUVs from 2014 and 2015. Also covered are 151,000 Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs from 2013 to 2015.

The affiliated automakers say brake fluid can leak inside a hydraulic control unit for the anti-lock brakes, possibly causing an electrical short that can lead to fires.

Kia's recall will start Oct. 15, while Hyundai's will start Oct. 23. Dealers for both companies will inspect the control units for leaks and replace them if needed at no cost to owners.

Thanks for sharing! We usually merge international recalls into the global recalls thread, but will keep this independent as the Indian Santa Fe could be affected. Also tweaking thread title to get the attention of Santa Fe owners.

Hyundai and Kia have asked the customers of recalled vehicles to park them outdoors and not indoors till the recall isssue is fixed.

The recalls cover 203,000 Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs from 2013 to 2015. Also included are over 440,000 Kia Optima midsize sedans from 2013 through 2015 and Kia Sorento SUVs from 2014 and 2015. Hyundai spokesman Michael Stewart said the company’s North America safety team met Friday and decided that the Santa Fes should not be parked in garages.

“After further review, it was determined that out of an abundance of caution, customers should park the vehicles outside until the recall is completed,” Stewart said.

Hyundai and Kia flag $2.9bn earnings hit from auto quality costs.

Shares dive after engine woes prompt third-quarter profit warning.

Quote:
Hyundai Motor and affiliate Kia Motors warned of a fresh $2.9 billion provision expense related to engine issues, after years-long quality problems that have tarnished the credibility of the South Korean automakers.

Hyundai Motor Group said on Monday their third-quarter earnings would reflect quality-related costs of a combined 3.36 trillion won ($2.94 billion), of which Hyundai accounted for 2.1 trillion and Kia for 1.26 trillion.

The latest provisions reflect higher-than-expected replacement rates for Theta II GDI engines of old vehicles subject to recalls, as well as growing consumer complaints over other engines not subject to recall

Re: Hyundai, Kia recall vehicles for leaks that can cause fires - Indian Santa Fe might be affected

Hyundai Motor America has agreed to pay a cash penalty of $54 million and other fines that could add up to $140 million. Kia Motors America was also fined and could pay as much as $70 million.

This is the result of an inquiry by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into its recalls of the 2011–2014 Sonata and 2013–2014 Santa Fe Sport SUV, as well as Kia vehicles from 2011–2014 model years.

NHTSA concluded the automakers didn't respond well enough in recalls of 2011–2014 models including the Santa Fe Sport and Sonata.
