Hyundai & Kia fined Rs. 1533 crore in USA

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reported that sister companies Hyundai and Kia have agreed to pay a fine of US$ 210 million for delaying a recall.

The Korean duo had delayed the recall of 1.6 million vehicles that had engine issues. Both carmakers admitted to reporting inaccurate details regarding recalls to the authorities. Hyundai’s penalty stands at US$ 140 million while Kia will be paying US$ 70 million. This includes upfront payment, allocation for specified safety measures and a deferred penalty if the obligations are not met. Hyundai will also invest US$ 40 million to build a safety field test and inspection laboratory in the United States and also upgrade its IT infra to better analyze safety data.

This settlement covers 2015 and 2017 recalls for issues that could lead to bearing wear and possibly engine failure. While Hyundai released a statement saying they are taking immediate measures for better safety while Kia denied the allegations and agreed for a settlement to avoid lengthy dispute with the government.

Fro the news source, there are the models involved in the recall " The 2015 and 2017 recalls involved the 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata and 2013-2014 Santa Fe Sport vehicles, while Kia did not recall the vehicles until 2017, when it called back the 2011-2014 Optima, 2012-2014 Sorento, and 2011-2013 Sportage vehicles."

As usual Indian customer vehicles won't be part of the recall.

As per the data available from SIAM - shows Hyundai has not been keen on recalls in India. From 2012 to 2020, only 30k cars recalled for trivial issues, where owners have been reporting the occasional major mechanical and electronic issues with Hyundai cars.

To the members of this forum who know of companies that have gone through ups and downs and maybe some background of Kia-Hyundai; is this the eventual fall from grace for the Korean Conglomerate caused by long time rotting from within or is this a normal ebb and flow of a company?

Far from a fall from grace. In fact, it's quite clever that they went with a settlement over a prolonged legal battle, which might have kept them in bad light and prolonged debates for a long time. The fact that they were even able to defer some of their penalty payments is yet another win for them.
From a pure business management perspective, quite a well managed situation. As for the consumer, well, not so great though.

Re: Hyundai & Kia fined Rs. 1533 crore in USA

  • All the below information is inline with my previous opinions. Hyundai/Kia does not bother about public safety as long as they are able to make profits. It is okay for companies to have manufacturing issues and recall cars, but denying it, trying to hide it, fixing it on paper.
  • Kia achieves operating profit in less than a year
  • Kia Seltos achieves 3 star crash rating
  • Hyundai refuses to acknowledge brake issues

There was a funny comment in one of the youtube videos "KIA: Killed in automobile"

NHTSA's recall report states that owners of potentially affected Kia models should be alert for "engine noise, illumination of check-engine light [or] low-oil light, fuel smell, burning smell, oil leaking, smoke." However, NHTSA said, there has been no manufacturing or design defect identified yet, and Kia is recalling the vehicles as a "preventative measure to mitigate any unreasonable fire risk."

The below car was on fire after the recall procedure. The lady in the video also mentions of brake failure.

CarPlay Issues Plaguing Hyundai and Kia Cars, Nobody Knows What’s Going On

Who is to be blamed - Apple or Hyunda/KIAi?

CarPlay is typically considered the more refined and reliable alternative to Android Auto, but Hyundai and Kia owners certainly think otherwise

Quote:
And this is because since the iOS 14 update released by Apple last fall, using CarPlay behind the wheel has been quite a nightmare for many of them, as random disconnects occur on every single drive.

And what’s worse is that nobody seems to know what’s happening, as according to car owners, some dealerships blame Apple, while the Cupertino-based tech giant says this is happening on the carmaker’s side.
