Re: NYTimes makes fun of the new, weird radiator grilles

I think more than just the grille, the whole design is what we should be talking about. A bigger grille may suit the car if the rest of the design complement it. Like below

Not just Ambassador but most retro cars had bigger grille but no one complained.

Do I need to say anything more? Ok then

But when the design makes it disproportionate, it becomes an eyesore. Even more difficult to digest when it's a luxury segment product.

Re: NYTimes makes fun of the new, weird radiator grilles

What I see is, the chrome applique can make a big yet subtle designed grill eyesore. Even the blacked out bigger grills looks good with most of the car colours.

A blackened one adds a gangsta character to the car.

This is just my honest opinion. No offence to the chrome garnish lovers

The Ugliest? For me it was the first generation Xylo. Wonderful car, terrible front facia.

How would people classify this one? Looks much better than the 1st gen IMHO.

Re: NYTimes makes fun of the new, weird radiator grilles

I think as the years go, it will become a trend and people will start loving the huge grills. I recently saw a Fortuner through my IRVM, with a huge Lexus style front grill and my immediate reaction was YUCK!! How on earth they could spoil the beautiful T-FORT with this grill!!

May be in the next 5 years this will become the industry norm to have huge grill, if the designers could not do it, they may at least have a pseudo/fake grill to make it look huge

It isn't amusing to me to see the way BMW has 'grilled' itself on the burner so much to evolve

Re: NYTimes makes fun of the new, weird radiator grilles

Thank (or blame; your prerogative) the Chinese for the trend.

The future is so bright for the Chinese car industry you have to wear shades. Literally.

Chinese car buyers adore cars with chrome grilles, the more garish and gothic the better. A stroll down the aisles of the Beijing International Automotive show, held the past two weeks, was to be confronted at every corner with a Chinese domestic automobile jeering at you with a mouthful of bling.

“It is all about face,” said David Goggins, an executive with FAW-Volkswagen, one of the larger joint ventures between Western car makers and the Chinese. “It is about how you show off.”

“It is purely about status,” agreed Anthony Williams-Kenny, the British global design director for auto maker Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. “It is about telling people ‘I’m important, I’m successful, I’m at the top rung.’”

"It's with China in mind because China is a rather young market," Shiro Nakamura, Nissan Motor Co.'s chief creative officer, said at the show. "They don't know the name of the brand; they don't know the quality, the performance. So visual communication is most important. In the first encounter, you judge visually."

Re: NYTimes makes fun of the new, weird radiator grilles

- Opens the thread
- "Oh my eyes ! my eyes !!"
- goes to the new Civic thread
- soothing for the eyes !
In the world of large mouthed cars, the new civic is a sight for the sore eyes. Clean , not too loud and it does stand out ! I may get trolled for this but somehow I like the BMW beaver grilles Lexus and Genesis needs to tone down a bit on the grille front.
