Among the long list of car brands present across the globe, Toyota has come out on top as the most popular. The Japanese carmaker is said to be the world's most popular car brand, registering the highest market share in as many as 44 countries.



According to reports, Toyota is most commonly seen in countries in Africa, Asia and parts of Europe. Among these, however, Toyota is said to have the highest following in Yemen, where it is said to have a market share of over 93 per cent.



Here are the top five most popular car brands across the world

3. Renault
4. Hyundai

It hence comes as no surprise that the Toyota Hilux is the most popular car in the world. In fact, Toyota models occupy four of the top five spots in the list of the world's most popular cars. The Toyota Corolla and the Land Cruiser are close behind in the second and third spot, while the RAV4 is the fifth most popular car across global markets.

Exactly, very surprised to see Octavia in top 5.
Is the individual brand inclusive of their sub-brands? eg: Volkswagen inclusive of Audi, Skoda and others?

Good to see the Skoda Octavia at number 4! The engine-transmission choices, space, frugality, safety and price all combined make it a formidable package. VW must be very jealous of the Skoda Octavia themselves.

Other 4 cars on the top 5 list are pretty obvious ones. Toyota has the reputation of unbreakability that’s just hard to beat, wish they brought their global products to India as well.

Only one country; Monaco had a premium brand Mercedes-Benz as it’s highest selling brand (although car was a Smart Fortwo)

Another good surprise was the VW iD.3 an electric car as the top seller in Netherlands!

Skoda Octavia in the top 4!! Happy to see my car up there.

On a closer look, it is made it to top 4 as it is the popular model in 6 countries and the six are Austria, Boznia Herzegovina,Croatia, Czech republic, Poland, Switzerland. If we take population statistics or number of cars sold all over the world, it wont reach the top 4.

But that doesn't take away any of its merits of being a well rounded car satisfying both the enthusiastic driver as well as his family.

As a result of being popular,
Many mods and bolt ons are available for toyota cars.

I was researching for some electrical switches and wiring for a fortuner recently, and I was surprised at the amount of support from aftermarket tuning houses and Manufacturers.

Same is the case with SUzuki parts!

And when it comes to bigger parts like Head Units and Instrument clusters, the more popular the car, the better the mod Quality and availability!

Pleasantly surprised (and also proud ) to see Octavia in this list. Toyota's reliability and after sales support is by far the best amongst all car brands - this fact was well known among the automobile fraternity. But this report goes to show their sheer commitment and focus across several geographies.

Does Toyota Hilax include the Fortuner as well or only the pick up variant. I'm also really surprised to see Octavia up there in top 5 leaving cars like Civic, Fiesta, Golf etc behind.

Edit: Another noticable thing is, in Bangladesh, Corolla is the highest selling car where as in India Swift it is according to the website. Even a couple of years ago it was actually Alto which probably wouldn't even qualify to sell in some countries.

Only the pick-up Hilux, no Fortuner included in that. Venezuela is the only country where Fortuner is the most sold car, as mentioned in the list.

Does anyone know whether the Octavia which won the 4th spot, is it the same sedan that is sold in India or the (ugly) liftback version that is sold in Europe? I think it is the latter but not able to get much info.

I thought most of middle-east will be painted with Toyota . There are enough "organisations" out there that would mount a gun on a Hilux.

Except Toyota, lots of surprises ! Never expected the Octavia to have this position, but anyways happy for it. It is indeed a well rounded car !

I also expected The United States to be labelled by Ford or Tesla & if I am not wrong the F-series is amongst the popular/top sellers in that market.

Does not come as a surprise to me, for the Brand. As for a UTE being the top seller, that is indeed a surprise.

I was looking up some stats for number of New and Used cars on sale in New Zealand. These are approximate numbers. Toyota were at 13,400 and VW (Just VW brand of cars) were just over 3000. The total cars on sale are close to 32,000 so thats ~45% of the market which Toyota holds followed by Mazda, Honda and Hyundai.

Ford's Ranger was the champ of the UTE market in kiwi land. Post introduction of the updated and all new Hilux, the crown has gone back to Toyota. The brand commands a huge following in the rural (which is most of NZ) sector where folks need a tough, dependable, easy to repair vehicle.

On the other hand, Skoda, Hyundai and Kia are gaining popularity. The Octavia wagon is the new replacement vehicle for New Zealand Police, to replace the aging and gas guzzling Holden's. The Octavia wagon is without doubt the faster moving car for Skoda NZ and the Kodiaq is gaining a lot of traction. Hyundai's Palisade and Kia's Sorento are also gaining popularity with their sharp designs and loaded to the gills interior.

Toyota reigns supreme in the southern hemisphere. Its not just the Hilux, the RAV4, Camry, Corolla hatchback and new Yaris are gaining acceptance as private ownership vehicles due to their attractive design, much improved interior quality and excellent after sales service.

Anybody can guess how big or small the numbers are going to be in these European countries. What a joke of a metric really.
