Canada announces ban on IC-engine vehicle sales from 2035

Canada has announced a ban on IC-engine vehicle sales. According to a media report, the country will only sell zero-emission cars and light trucks from 2035.

As per reports, Canada is aiming to achieve zero emissions across the country by 2050. Ahead of the 2035 deadline, the country has set certain interim targets for 2025 and 2030 as well. However, the government is aware that it needs to offer more support to achieve this goal. According to reports, currently EVs amount to just 3.5% of the total vehicle sales in Canada.

Reports also suggested that the Canadian government will be investing heavily in consumer rebates, charging stations and other business tax breaks, to boost EV sales in the country.

Canada follows the footsteps of Britain, which also announced a ban on combustion engine sales from 2030. Apart from the 2 countries, the state of California (the largest car market in the USA) also made a similar announcement recently. The state of California has banned the sale of IC-engine powered vehicles from 2035.

2035 is late and it may not even be necessary. They just need to support the charging infrastructure and tax rebates for the next 4-5 years and the market will take care of itself.

In the next 2-3 years in most of the developed countries, people will start worrying about the depreciation of their new ICE purchases. It's already happening in many of the European countries and EV shares are growing at a rapid pace. With the increasing variety of EV models, competition started to kick in and prices are started to come down for some of the models. There are almost enough battery plants are in pipeline in Europe to cover the entire European car market into EVs.

Why do countries want to force people to switch to new technologies? If electric cars are as good as IC-engined cars then people would move over without being hesitant.

The only reason you would ban IC cars is that electric cars are not competent enough to replace regular vehicles. Why force people to change their vehicles if the technology has not developed yet?

14 years is a long time, especially in the realm of technology that changes so fast each and every day. A cell phone from 14 years ago can never be compared to a phone today. Hope the EV cars too achieve that kind of leap 14 years from now in order to replace the mainstream cars.

Also it would be nice to make sure most independent houses have solar in order to support the grid. No point in just changing the tech in cars without enhancing the energy source. Canada unlike the UK, is a huge country with people covering lots of miles. The grid needs to be in place to support such moves.

The policy more towards the OEMs than common people. As people would still be able to retain their IC vehicles upto 2050. Only when there is a policy framework the manufacturers would start investing in the research and development and also in the support infrastructure.

This deadlines can be always postponed based upon the technological advancement at that point of time. Best example is is for good or bad the Indian government decision to jump to bs6 from BS4 directly. If left to the industry this transition would have taken more than 10 years.

And also search legislations creates collective mood towards the transition.

Petroleum production in Canada is a major industry which is important to the economy of North America. Canada has the third largest oil reserves in the world and is the world's fourth largest oil producer and fourth largest oil exporter.
Isn't this a bit contradictory?
