BMW ad banned due to 'irresponsible' engine revving sound

A new radio advertisement for the BMW M brand has been banned in the UK, after one listener complained that the sound of the car's engine revving was 'irresponsible'.

According to a media report, the BMW M brand advert opens with a revving sound of a car's engine. This sound is then broken with a voice-over, before changing to a slightly louder revving sound from a car.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is said to have upheld the complaint from the disgruntled listener. The ASA stated that a motoring advertisement should not demonstrate power, acceleration or handling characteristics. The ASA code also states that an advertisement should not refer to speed in a way that it might encourage 'dangerous, competitive or irresponsible driving'.

BMW tried to defend the advert, stating that the car was not being driven at speed. They further stated that the revving sound used in the advertisement was recorded when the car was static. However, ASA has continued to uphold the ban on the advert.

And here we have companies like Ford and Renault that air completely misleading advertisements and still get away with it!

EU as usual is at it again, perhaps they want BMW M series ad to start with bicycle noises, that is what their transportation is evolving into. Good luck BMW with your M Series.

Good for BMW. A ban on advertisement will generate more publicity than the advertisement itself.

Absolutely!

In fact, just uploading the video on YouTube with a caption stating it's banned (without promoting it obviously) is enough to get the views and publicity!

Talking of ads promoting unsafe driving, this Creta ad was pretty irksome. The way he overtakes the bus at 00:31 by swerving out of his lane is a sureshot recipe for a head-on collision. One of my most hated ads.

"The ASA stated that a motoring advertisement should not demonstrate power, acceleration or handling characteristics"

So I guess car manufacturers should start advertising baby pants instead of cars,
Europeans surely would be super happy with that. Idiots like these are the prime reason ICE cars will die an early death. If you don't like the sound of a car, just don't watch the ad. People go poking around unnecessarily when they have nothing meaningful or productive to do in their lives.

Ya, probably they should have had the sound of a Cow mooing in the ad instead of the engine revving !!

What is left to demonstrate then?
It is high time, regulating agencies like these stop "overthinking".

These people are regulating society to death!
If a car engine won’t rev then what will it do.

Well, shouldn't a BMW M-series demonstrate only these characteristics?
I mean isn't showing these aspects is the whole motive behind a M series.

Thanks.

It is possible to rev the nuts out of a car at crawling speeds by shifting to neutral, ASA. It is even easier in a manual, in case you are interested

Can we identify the aggrieved consumer?
I almost have the urge to load up some Honda's with big,fat exhausts and rev the nuts outside his home.

Quite the outrage as expected without even knowing the circumstances. Want every country to be like India(where law does not apply), but admire the clean roads, traffic in western countries.

We should start giving best petrolhead awards based on the outrage.

They already have revv limiters on every car, you cannot revv unnecessarily in neutral.

This is the UK who banned the ad, and they're no longer part of the EU.

Unbelievable that it was taken off air for that reason though. They've truly lost their bearings.

Cheers
