Nissan has finally unveiled the much-awaited production version of its 'Z' sports car. The new Nissan Z looks very similar to its prototype version unveiled this time last year, albeit with a few changes to give it a more aggressive look.



The new Nissan Z carries forward the square grille at the front, flanked on either side by LED headlamps with the curved LED daytime running lights. The sports car will sit on 19-inch alloy wheels while the rear features LED tail lights and an integrated spoiler on the boot lid.



On the inside, the Nissan Z comes with a cabin layout similar to what we saw on the prototype version. The sports car features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a large central infotainment unit with connected technology and a host of other equipment as well. There are three gauge pods on the central part of the dashboard displaying boost pressure, turbo speed and voltage.



Powering the Nissan Z is a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine producing 400 BHP and 475 Nm. It is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, although a 9-speed automatic transmission is available as an option. Power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels. Nissan is yet to announce the acceleration and top speed figures of the Z.



The Nissan Z will be offered in a choice of two trims - Sport & Performance. The company will also be offering a limited edition 'Proto Spec' option, based on the top-end variant, which will be limited to just 240 units.

The Nissan Z also comes in a wide range of exterior colour options, both dual-tone and single tone. There will also be a variety of interior themes to match.

The new Z is the successor to the outgoing 370Z, which first debuted over a decade ago. Pricing for the all-new Nissan Z is yet to be revealed, while sales & deliveries are expected to begin from mid-2022.

I think the Z is the perfect successor to the 240/300ZX. It's (hopefully) light, has enough power, which shall ensure a good power-to-weight ratio and being Japanese should have the mod-potential. I'm pretty sure Nissan won't bring it to India, but if they did, they'll definitely get the sales. Just hope they can price it right in other countries and this is a worthy successor to the legend that is the 240/300ZX.

Great to see Nissan bring out a car true to its roots. Yes, most probably, the last generation where we can enjoy a petrol engine with manual transmission.

Nissan debuted the production version of the new Z Coupe. Delivering all the promises of last year’s Z Proto concept car.



The Japanese model has a legacy of more than 50 years, a quick recap of the Nissan Z history.

Datsun 240Z / 260Z / 280Z (S30)

The first Fairlady Z, known as the Datsun 240Z in the US, was unveiled in 1969. It was one of the most popular sportscars of its time, selling over 520,000 units in its nine-year production run

The original US-spec 240Z was fitted with a 2.4-liter inline six-cylinder engine producing 151 hp but over the years it evolved to the more powerful 260Z and finally the 280Z with up to 170 hp.

Datsun 280ZX (S130)

A full update to the Z appeared in 1978 in the form of the Datsun 280ZX.

The new 2.8-liter inline-six engine produced 135-143 hp while a turbocharged variant made 180 hp. The 280ZX enjoyed a four-year production run up to 1983.

Nissan 300ZX (Z31)

In 1983, celebrating the Z’s 50th birthday, Nissan unveiled the 300ZX.

the 300ZX was fitted with the first mass-produced turbocharged V6 engine coming from Japan. The 3.0-liter V6 that replaced the inline-sixes of the previous generations produced 200-205 hp.

Nissan 300ZX (Z32)

The fourth-generation Z brought a fresh styling approach with an aerodynamic shape and futuristic design details. The 300ZX enjoyed an 11-year production run from 1989 until 2000 when it was discontinued.

Under the bonnet, an improved version of the 3.0-liter V6 produced 222 hp in naturally-aspirated form or up to 300 hp when fitted with twin-turbochargers.

Nissan 350Z (Z33)

Previewed by the Z concept in 2001, the production version of the Nissan 350Z was unveiled in 2002 retaining most of the prototype’s gorgeous styling. Between 2002 and 2008, Nissan sold more than 250,000 units of the 350Z all over the world.

It came with a new naturally-aspirated 3.5-liter V6 producing 287 hp, or 306 hp in the Nismo performance variant.

Nissan 370Z (Z34)

The 370Z debuted in 2009 as an evolution of the 350Z both in terms of design and performance. The model enjoyed a 12-year long production run from 2009 to 2021.

The updated naturally aspirated 3.7-liter engine produced 332 hp, or 350 hp in Nismo guise

Nissan Z (Z35)

The latest addition to the Nissan Z family is also the fastest and most powerful to date. Considered as one of the last ICE-powered sportscars, the new Z was previewed by the Z Proto concept in 2020 and debuted in production form recently ahead of a 2022 market launch.

The 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 produces 400 hp, sending power to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic.

The base model is priced at $40,000, is well equipped. Personally, I like the way it looks, the front number plate will help in filling in the front gap, dare I say it looks better than the Toyota supra.

This may be Nissan's last hurrah in the Gasonline powered, RWD layout, manual sports car. Sad that India may never get a sports car which is accessible for the middle class.
