Re: GM Cars: No seatbelt? AT won't shift out of "Park"

Like how others have mentioned above, not sure if this will ensure the driver/ passenger safety while there are so many workarounds available. I've seen even police cars with drivers tucking the belt behind them! If someone is serious about his/her safety, then just a warning would suffice.

This feature is just adding up to the tech dependence of the vehicle and some more cost to it. Article also mentions extending this to front passenger! And what if am driving alone? Am sure this point would be addressed but it will all come at added cost. Is it worth it?

Can there not be a simple mechanical solution to ensure safety, like the seat belt linked to the door? As soon as the door is opened, the belt slides open with it resting on the steering and when the door is closed, it would fasten as a seat belt. Am sure people would come up with workarounds for this as well, but just thinking aloud. Also, not sure of the risks of having such things in case if accidents or other scenarios.

What about the co passanger? He too needs to be buckled up before shifting from P mode?
I see this as a waste of technology. Those who don’t want to buckle up will always find a by pass. Those who care will put a seat belt even without an audio/ visual warning. Let’s leave it to the driver/ passanger to decide if they care for their life or not.
The money may better be used to do R&D on automatic seat belt detection system/ camera and let police issue challan. That’s the biggest deter IMHO.

While this is a welcome move but a simple thing like the below can make this feature useless : -
