Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door PHEV performance sedan with 805 BHP teased ahead of unveil

Mercedes-AMG has released a teaser showcasing the silhouette of the upcoming GT 4-Door PHEV performance sedan.

The teaser shared by Mercedes-AMG on social media confirms that the upcoming GT63 S 4-Door Coupe plug-in hybrid model will have its global unveil on September 1, 2021.

The PHEV performance sedan from the German brand is said to come packed with a 6.1 kWh battery powering a single electric motor. The combined power output from the hybrid powertrain on the GT63 S 4-Door Coupe is expected to be a little over 800 BHP and 1000 Nm.

The Mercedes-AMG GT63 S 4-Door Coupe PHEV is also expected to feature a host of carbon fibre components, to offset the weight of the hybrid powertrain. There will also most likely be a host of carbon fibre elements inside the cabin as well, alongside a bunch of tech and equipment.

The new AMG GT63 S 4-Door PHEV will rival the likes of the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. Details of the car's launch and pricing will be announced at the time of unveiling.

Mercedes-AMG has kick-started its electrified era by unveiling the new GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door Coupe.

The first plug-in hybrid from AMG uses the combination of a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8, a 6.1-kilowatt-hour battery pack, and an electric motor mounted on the rear axle producing 831hp and 1,400 Nm. The 0-62mph sprint comes in just 2.9sec and tops out at 196mph.

The electric motor takes its power from a 6.1kWh, 400V battery pack. Claimed to weigh just 89kg.

Mercedes claims the new PHEV will manage 7.5 miles of EV running per charge, with the electric motor capable of handling propulsion alone at speeds of up to 81mph.

Design changes over the standard car are subtle, limited chiefly to a new front bumper modelled on the two-door GT, bespoke badging, new exhaust outlets.

Subtle adaptations inside include a number of hybrid-specific displays for the MBUX infotainment system, including an EV range indicator, real-time power consumption data and an electric motor power gauge.

Exclusive 20in and 21in wheel designs.

Pricing and availability details have yet to be confirmed, but expect a sizeable premium over the £141,855 commanded by the standard GT 63 S 4-Door Coupé.

The combined torque figures are truly impressive though for a street legal performance sedan which can also be a daily driver.

Did they invested a lot for just "10 miles" of EV only range which I believe will go even down when the temperatures aren't ideal?

Or did they do this for the impressive torque figures alone?

I can say from my limited experience that AMGs are best for occasional drives and track usage only. They are seriously STIFF and a similar (or lesser) priced Porsche or a BMW M car is a far better proposition.

This is not only owing to our road conditions, reviewers around the world have said this. The AMG division thinks it's all about power and looks and less about usability. I rode shotgun in an AMG E63s twice (very short spins) and that car was far from comfortable. One can't do grand touring with these, on the other hand a panamera or an M5/M8 would be apt.

This is aimed squarely at the M5 CS. It will be interesting to see what Nurburgring and 0-100 times this does, not because they matter in real life but because marketing teams keep bandying them about. Still, it will be a stupendous achievement if a porky 5 seater Merc is quicker than a Viper ACR or 'Vette ZR1. The GT63S is still quicker than the M5 CS around the 'Ring, though the sprints are down to which publication you believe.

The GT63 is a fatty - the E Class chassis and its clever AWD system do it no favours. But then again, it cossets you (ride quality aside) in much the same way that an S Class does. It will be really interesting to see this go mano-a-mano with the M5 CS. We are privileged to enjoy the last hurrah of V8s - I never would have imagined an 800 hp hybrid with 5 seats and a hatch in the rear!

How did they manage such a 'huge' 7.5miles range, out of that 6.1Kwh battery pack?

If it were a tesla, it would have extracted at least 30-40miles of range, out of that 6.1Kwh battery.

My guess is that it isn't a traditional battery pack as much as it is a supercapacitor system, like the Lamborghini Sian. These are very good for short boosts providing much more power, but not for longer ranges. The Sian doesn't even have a pure electric mode.
