Italy wants supercar brands to be exempt from EU's upcoming 2035 IC-engine ban

The European Union had previously proposed plans to completely ban the sale of all petrol and diesel engine-powered vehicles from 2035. While the plan is still yet to receive approval, a media report now suggests that the Italian government is seeking some form of leniency, especially for supercar brands.

Reports suggest that the Italian government is in talks with the European Commission to exempt supercar brands like Ferrari, Lamborghini and Pagani, from the proposed 2035 IC-engine ban rule.

Roberto Cingolani, the Italian minister for ecological transition and also a former non-executive member of Ferrari's board of directors, is in talks with the EU Commission. Cingolani is in discussion with the EU commission to understand how the IC-engine ban will apply for supercar brands, who produce very limited number of vehicles, as compared to other mainstream carmakers.

According to reports, small-volume car companies will struggle to transition to electric power, compared to other large-volume brands, as they do not benefit from the 'economies-of-scale'. This translates to such companies requiring more time to prepare and complete the transition, which could potentially extend past the 2035 deadline.

While this allows companies like Ferrari and Lamborghini to continue manufacturing IC-engine powered models, it misses out on the fact that both companies have already announced their electrification plans. Ferrari, earlier this year, confirmed that their first all-electric supercar will debut in 2025, while Lamborghini's electric model will debut before the end of this decade.

I don't oppose this. However, the manufacturer should have at least some % EV fleet as part of their fleet sales or else pay high carbon taxes.

Supercars are generally driven only a few thousand kms a year. The real concern should be the pollution from yachts, helicopters, and private jets which most of these super car owners have.
