Land Rover planning a more luxurious Defender model

Land Rover is said to be working on an all-new model for its Defender line-up. Apart from the upcoming Land Rover Defender 130, the British car brand is already working on introducing an even more luxurious model, which will become the flagship product for the Defender line-up.

According to a media report, this new luxurious model will be based on the Range Rover platform. Reports suggest that the more luxurious Defender model will be underpinned by the MLA platform, which will also be used on the next-generation Range Rover and Range Rover Sport offerings.

The MLA platform will also allow the Defender family to expand further and offer the flexibility of using either ICE, PHEV or BEV powertrains.

The new flagship Defender will reportedly combine its off-roading capabilities with the premium-ness of a Range Rover model. The sharing of the platform will help the company reduce its development costs and aim for higher profit margins.

The Defender line-up will come with a range of engine options, varying from the 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines to the V8 on the higher-spec performance variants. There will be PHEVs and mild-hybrid variants on offer as well. The use of the Range-Rover platform could also allow the development of an all-electric Defender to rival the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQG.

The MLA-platform based Land Rover Defender models are expected to arrive sometime in late-2024 or early-2025. They will be sold alongside the 90, 110 and upcoming 130 variants of the SUV.
