USA: GM loses best-seller title to Toyota after 90-year reign

GM Loses Best-Seller Title To Toyota After 90-Year Reign.

GM led the U.S. market for 90 years, but lower output due to the chip shortage crisis gave Toyota an opportunity.

The delivery numbers for 2021 are in, and Toyota is the largest automaker in the United States for the first time ever. This is the first time in 90 years for General Motors not to wear the crown as the volume leader in the country.

Toyota moved 2,332,262 vehicles in the US in 2021, which was up 10.4 percent over 2020. GM had 2,218,228, which was a 12.9 percent drop from the previous year.

There was a difference of 114,034 deliveries between them.

The RAV4 was Toyota's strongest selling product in 2021. The automaker delivered 430,387 of them in the US, which was a 5.3 percent drop from 2020.

Toyota beats GM to become USA's top-selling car brand in 2021

Toyota has become USA's top-selling car brand of 2021, overtaking General Motors (GM).

The Japanese carmaker registered 2.33 million vehicle sales last year, compared to the 2.21 million units sold by General Motors. As per reports, GM sales went down by 13% in 2021, while Toyota car sales improved by 10% compared to their respective 2020 annual sales figures.

General Motors has been the largest player in the US automotive market for close to 90 years. The loss to Toyota marks the first time that the Detroit-based automobile giant has not led the US automotive market, since 1931.

Sales of General Motors have been severely hit by the shortage of semiconductors. GM though, states that it will bounce back in 2022 as the supply of semiconductors improves.

Has chip shortage ALONE caused GM sales to go down by 13% when Toyota managed a 10% increase? Or are there other factors at play here that they are conveniently mis-attributing to semiconductor availability .

Re: USA: GM loses best-seller title to Toyota after 90-year reign

Toyota became the most popular vehicle brand in USA last year. The last time this happened was in 2009. Its SUVs were responsible for this solid position.

Tesla was the 16th bestselling brand.

Re: USA: GM loses best-seller title to Toyota after 90-year reign

USA 2021:

Toyota outsells all GM brands combined. GM's mkt share halved in 2005-21.
GM, Ford, Stellantis left sedan segments to focus on trucks/SUV. Toyota, Hyundai never left.
Last year, sedans made up 18% of market.
Tesla: still a minor player, at least in terms of volume.
