Reports suggest that BMW will develop a completely new cylinder head for its engines. The new-generation engines are expected to significantly reduce the CO2 emission levels from the company's future models.

The decision to develop new-generation engines by BMW comes at a time when most car manufacturers are working on achieving carbon-neutrality. BMW's two main rivals, Audi and Mercedes-Benz, are now working on introducing more EVs. Audi has even announced that its last IC-engine powered vehicle will be introduced in 2026 and the company plans to discontinue combustion engines entirely by 2033.

Are you sure? I would bet long odds that no auto maker will develop a new 8 cylinder engine. Even a new 6 cylinder is very unlikely. Suspect this has been taken out of context - May be someone who understands German can read the original and comment.

Re: BMW developing a new generation of petrol & diesel engines

2024 G60 M5 is long rumored to feature a new V8 (S68) making up to 750bhp with mild hybrid assistance. It will be lighter, smaller and yet significantly more powerful over current V8. This news seems to confirm those rumors. This same V8 might also go in concept XM.

The link in the original post quotes the BMW board member for development, Mr. Frank Weber.

So you're not planning an independent electric sedan?
No, because we are convinced that this is the only way we can offer a befitting amount of space without having to make too many compromises due to aerodynamics. Our efficient drive technology will nevertheless enable the best possible consumption values and ranges.

What about the internal combustion engines?
One thing is certain for us: we still need the state-of-the-art combustion engine for a few years to effectively reduce CO2 emissions in the passenger car sector globally. That's why we're working on a new generation of engines: petrol, diesel, six-cylinder, eight-cylinder. They will then also be technologically prepared for the coming emission standards. With the six-cylinder engine alone, we are reducing CO2 emissions more massively than has ever been the case with a generation change. We are helped here by the fact that legislation is beginning to be standardized around the world. In order to reconcile emission requirements on the one hand and performance requirements on the other, we looked at the entire charge cycle and found a promising approach there.

Would be great if they are able to incorporate the free valve technology, that is a giant leap with benefits in each and every aspect of the engine, I can't see why a mainstream car maker can't make it accessible and affordable, for their premium range of cars atleast.

Re: BMW developing a new generation of petrol & diesel engines

Would love if any manufacturer brings Entry Ignition Engine (2 stroke) to life which works theoretically but there is no practical example. Even though the tech will be limited to small engines (space constraint, etc) but it promises greater power, efficiency and less emissions on paper as compared to all the engines currently on offer.

A 2 stroke 2 cylinder car will be equivalent to a 4 cylinder car in performance in my opinion.

I guess we can only pray that some manufacturer develops a new working tech (either this or some other) to keep ICE alive.
