General Motors is said to be planning on introducing a number of fee-based digital features by 2026.

According to media reports, in an investor conference, Steve Carlisle - President of GM North America revealed that the company is planning to introduce as many as 50 value-added features and services over the next 36 to 48 months. These features could range from predicting vehicle maintenance timings to even providing features such as online shopping. The digital features and in-vehicle subscription services will be supported by GM's connectivity platform and Ultifi software, which also allows for over-the-air updates.

Carlisle also stated that the features and services will come with flexible pricing options, which include monthly, annual and lifetime subscription schemes. He further added that some of the features are designed to take advantage of the larger displays installed on certain models like the GMC Hummer EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV and Cadillac Lyriq. The bigger screens are said to allow GM to offer more data-oriented software products to its customers.

Reports also state that GM's push for more data-driven services & products is a part of their CEO, Mary Barra's plan to double the company's revenue to around US$ 280 billion by 2030.

Data oriented software products...

Sorry, the only thing I can read is, "We are going to use your screen to bombard you with adverts and business nearby notification."

Basically, same as your TV, smartphone or car radio.

This is sad, and although GM's not new to this idea(remember OnStar), what worries me more is this "wannabe Tesla" trend. Can't really blame them since everyone else is doing it too. You try to turn a company into a tech startup along the lines of "Tesla", you join in line behind-Motorola, DEC, Palm, Blackberry etc.

Double?? GM will be lucky to keep half their revenue by the end of this decade.

Not just GM , other manufacturers too have mulled over this idea, some as ridiculous as paying for heated steering wheel (link). Personally , I feel this is an utterly stupid concept that needs to be nipped in the bud. The only way this will succeed if customers reject this outright. There needs to be limit to corporate greed.
