Major international businesses pull out of Russia

Harley-Davidson has suspended its operations and shipments to Russia in the wake of the country's invasion of Ukraine.

Harley-Davidson has around 10 dealerships in Russia. Bikes that were destined for the country are now likely to be diverted to other markets.

Russia has been hit with sanctions after it invaded Ukraine last week. Many western companies including General Motors and Daimler Trucks have also suspended operations in Russia.

Apple has also suspended its retail operations in Russia, while tech giants like Youtube, Facebook and Tiktok have banned Russian state media house RT in Europe.

All I can say is that the West is probably giving the Russian market in a silver plate to the Chinese.

About Harley Davidson, not sure of their sales figures in Russia, but am pretty sure they were waiting for the slightest reason to exit the market. Now they got brownie points for boycotting evil Russia.

Sadly, there are none. US $ dominates the trade across the globe.

Very comprehensive list. The following have added to the list of corporate hellraisers:
  1. Renault makes 8 percent of its core earnings from Russia. They are shutting some operations because of logistics bottlenecks
  2. The British Jaguar Land Rover and Aston Martin paused vehicle shipments to Russia (they are just 1 percent of the Russian market)
  3. Mitsubishi will pause operations and sales in Russia too
  4. Amongst the energy companies - Eni (Italy), OMV (Austria), and Centrica (British)
  5. Aviation, logistics & shipping, telecom, technology and the financial services sectors have also waged a sanction

Also, Nokian Tyres which is Finnish and has 80 percent of its production in Russia, is restoring to Finland and US (and not China!)

Totally noob opinion.

Some of the companies mentioned here maybe just joining the bandwagon as they won't lose much if they withdraw from the Russian market, but will get good publicity. Or they may have been really looking for an excuse to exit the market.

But doesn't this look like shooting their own feet? More the reason for self sufficiency and home grown alternatives. Yes, Russia will be/is getting affected, but this should warn most major nations to become self reliant. The exact opposite of globalisation that the West preaches and wants.

Even if nations can't be, China would be more than glad to help out. And they can. Like @V.Narayan sir has already said in the other thread, "When you use a weapon too often it loses its edge."

Seems that some of the companies were actually potential investors who have decided to pull out! Even if it is publicity (as most people who raise their voice are often considered culpable for), it is important to add to the show of strength.

Self-reliance for everything is not possible, it is a far-stretched joke if anything that counters the very layman logic behind trade, which is a advanced and complex barter system. Yes, globalisation has its own disadvantages. But to build everything in-house is neither cost effective, nor practically possible, nor consumer-friendly, as escalated cost gets passed onto consumers vide tariff hike.

Generally, it is tough for me to understand that when a country's sovereignty is being challenged, why is there even a counter-narrative being built to pull down those organisations who are at least trying to raise a voice!

No one is condoning US here, but Russia does deserve a good resistance all the same.

re: Major international businesses pull out of Russia

Russia was never an important market for Harley when its comes to European sale and have around 10 dealers in Russia. So their profits are not going to get hit that bad.

Can't say the same about the other names like BP, Shell etc as BP will loose about $26 billion and Shell around $3 billion. So, who is the biggest loser time will tell.

Again, I am not in anyway against globalisation. I meant this oft used weapon of economic sanctions will only lead to its eventual ineffectiveness. These actions just push countries to be self reliant or if they can't, walk straight into China's hands. The opposite of what the West may want.

Though India, being a major country have to be self reliant at some level. Not at all advocating for the return of license raj, but the usual talk of 'China is way ahead of us', 'We can't build stuff, let us import from cost effective China' is kinda complacent. We shouldn't be sitting ducks at the whims of other nations. If tomorrow, USA takes some offence at us and the tech companies take the moral high ground (unthinkable but...). I am not sure how Indian IT industry would fare, but am pretty sure all of my social media will vanish overnight.

If anything, I would just want our Current account balance to remain favourable for our developing phase period.

The problem is the lack of respect for our human resources or our intellect. Doling out freebies and compromising on infrastructure, caste-based reservations, low investment in R&D, no social security; and the constant tug of war between Center and States on concurrent issues like electricity etc., We need a complete overhaul of and by the bureaucracy in our mindset. Sorry for digressing off the topic, but sometimes I feel we are in a stalemate situation. Sometimes the need is not to evolve old systems, but disrupt, overhaul and innovate. Which we miss to inculcate in our culture.

Volvo being owned by Geely and still pulling out just highlights the overall complexity of international relations and trade.
Despite the ownership they wouldn't want to lose their customer base which I guess is primarily western.

Like already mentioned self reliance is the way to go but IMO that would be limited to critical sectors like defense, power, tech, food and meds for us and even lesser for smaller countries limited by resources, climate, terrain etc.
So they're bound to be bi/multi lateral trade agreements and resultant groupings in the world order.

What I see and hope is that this results in a lot of smaller groupings of countries instead of being part of one of the two blocks, essentially a multi-polar world which we've been hearing for a long time.

But all said and done we've to be prepared to fight our own wars whether in trade, technology or terrain since we're uniquely blessed with our neighbours

PS : after posting and catching a glimpse of the title I realised how much we care about HD

My heart goes out to the good Russian people. Have had Russian friends in the USA and they are an awesome bunch.

Putin's war just took Russia's economy back a couple of decades. And you know who will suffer the most? Not the rich, but the middle class and people from economic levels below that. The hand-to-mouth citizens are finished. Careers destroyed. Those without savings will be out on the street.

The economic consequences of war will be devastating for Russian people. Way too much suffering in this decade. First Covid's effects on jobs & businesses, and now this war.
