Re: Stories Behind the Car names.

Maruti ZEN = Zero Engine Noise

Premier Padmini was named as Premier President. However, probably the 'President' part started drawing some controversies. It was renamed as Premier Padmini. BTW, if anyone clears the air around 'Padmini'...why in the world would one name a car as Padmini?

Padmini is named after a 14th-century Rajput princess.

Padmini translates to "she who sits on the lotus" and refers to the Goddess Lakshmi.

Re: Stories Behind the Car names.

Maruti Zen doesn't stand for zero engine noise, it stands for Japanese 'Sen' which means 1000. It was called Zen to associate with the Japanese connection and 1000cc aluminum engine. Also Sen is a Bengali surname, and would have sounded funny on a car, imagine : Maruti Sen!!!
Like wise the Alto stands for alternative, specifying the Kei car dimensions outside and 'big space' inside. the Eeco stands for economic commute.
the Wagon R stands for recreational Wagon, which was the original design spec for the car. The Baleno means lightning in Italian.
