USA Army buys Hummer EV for testing

The United States Army recently selected GM's defense division to supply them with a brand-new GMC Hummer EV. According to reports, the US armed forces is evaluating the electric model to check its viability for future military use.

The US Army is said to be exploring the use of battery-electric vehicles both on the frontline and in garrison environments. The vehicle will also be required to demonstrate its ability to generate, store and distribute power to the soldier. The move to test and demo an electric vehicle is part of the army's plans to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. The army will also leverage the capabilities of the Hummer EV's onboard charger to power up the equipment used by modern soldiers.

The GMC Hummer EV comes with a massive electric powertrain producing 1000 BHP, while offering over 300 miles (482 km) of range on a single charge. GMC also claims the Hummer EV can add 100 miles of range in just 12 minutes via a DC fast charger. The massive electric pickup truck is said to be capable of sprinting from 0 - 100 km/h in just 3 seconds.

However, the GMC Hummer EV isn't the only BEV being tested by the US Army. Canoo, an EV startup, also announced that they would be submitting a vehicle to the Army for evaluation.

Back to the roots, eh?

Hummer “brand” sure has come a long way from the H1 days.

Looking forward to see what comes out of this “evaluation” of EVs for military use, in general.

Interesting! I would love to see what their requirements are. Logistical support for an EV is going to be very different too. You don’t need fuel, but you will need generators or massive powerbanks or a reliable grid.

I wonder what the army feels is a realistic charging time?

Also, what happens when you fire some bullets into the battery?

What does this electrical Hummer weigh? They are quite heavy to start with, but an electric one with a decent range and this sort of power could easily weigh in at an additional 500-750kg?

Re: USA Army buys Hummer EV for testing

I am sure this will be a fully customised EV for the test. US Army doesn't need the Hummer EV to do 0-100 in 3secs. Neither does it need a 170kmph top speed.
What it needs are significantly more range, self-charging capability, and increased payload capacity.

Waiting for the results and outcome.

Wonder what will they do with that ? Send it to a conflict zone ? Within friendly territory, they could use it to may be pull out another vehicle, or may be tow a super heavy load. But fighting duty ? It will be a sitting duck once charge runs out.
