Australia to introduce a special licence for supercar owners; Undergo unique training as well

According to a media report, South Australia's Premier, Peter Malinauskas has proposed a new licencing scheme for supercar owners.

As per the new scheme, owners of "high-powered super sports cars" will have to undergo additional/specific training, before being allowed to drive such vehicles on public roads. The scheme also includes a ban on disabling traction control on said "high-powered vehicles".

The changes in the road safety law are said to be a direct result of the death of a teenage pedestrian who was hit by a Lamborghini Huracan outside a restaurant in Glengowrie, South Australia in 2019.

Malinauskas stated that the use of such high-powered supercars requires a high degree of driver competency and this should be tested before allowing a person to drive or acquire such a car. He further added that the special licencing will only be in place for those who want to drive an elite, high-powered sports car. Also, the new scheme is just to ensure that the driver has the ability to handle such a high-powered car in a way that doesn't compromise the safety of other road users and pedestrians.

Reports suggest that Malinauskas is said to introduce these reforms in parliament by the end of this year.

The value associated to one single citizen and determination to regulate the drivers of high end cars based on the incident is commendable. That's how one regulates to get safer roads for all. In our country unfortunately, such a death would have not been even noticed probably.

Makes a lot of sense to me. A lot of the owners who get their hands behind the wheels of such high performance cars don't have the capability to keep the machine tamed and under their complete control. This is mostly true to those wannabe, boy racers who are by default reckless when driving such cars. Several YouTube videos of crashes are a testament to that. On that note, I wish India too tightens the regulations with Driving licenses and perhaps bring a similar rule for those who own higher powered/ bigger vehicles where they got to pass additional driving tests. Pipe dream I know, but it could make the roads a safer place to a large extent.

Tiered licence is a good idea but won’t be of much use in our country. There are places where people who have never touched a car got their DLs with ease.

This proposal is a welcome move and fellow driving enthusiasts welcome it.

Some EVs are capable of acceleration that’s equal to Supercars and we definitely need some sort of driver training.

A very welcome proposal, but the reality is its a politician (State CM in this case) trying to appease people's anger when a judge let a killer driver walk.

Tragically, a teenage girl was killed in Adelaide by this moron, who then claimed it was not his fault, but that of his supercar and the judge fell for it!

Naturally, most people were outraged and the Premier had to come out with this line.
