re: Best selling cars worldwide | The denser the population, the smaller the car

Interesting, though a couple of anomalies here and there.

South Korea is almost as densely populated as Japan I believe, yet its largest selling car is a full size sedan.

Same in the case of UAE and Saudi Arabia. Even though the population of KSA is far bigger, it is also many times larger than UAE, so the population density is far less than UAE. Still UAE has the Landcruiser and Saudi Arabia has the Accent(Verna). Then again I am surprised, since the Camry has been the largest seller in Saudi Arabia ever since it took the mantle from the Cressida and Caprice Classic.

IMHO, I believe the top selling car telling us about the countries is a far more complicated thing. I used to even think that if the top selling vehicle is not within the list cheapest ten vehicles in the market, either the country is doing well or there is huge income disparity. But nope. Never a one size fits all yardstick. Top selling car can tell a lot about the country, but we can never compare it with others.

Most popular vehicle in each country?

Though the map might vary across the board, one thing is certain: Toyota’s dominance.

Quote:
The Japanese automaker—which was also the most valuable automaker in the world for many years before being overtaken by Tesla—had the best-selling vehicle in 41 countries of the 104 countries tallied.

It also had the world’s best-selling vehicle in 2019, the Toyota Corolla, though the sedan only took the top spot itself in five countries.
Quote:
As the best-seller in 16 countries, the Toyota Hilux truck (also known as the Toyota Pickup in North America) was the top vehicle in the most countries. It has a noticeably strong market share in the Southern Hemisphere, including in Argentina, South Africa, and Australia.

The other consistent factor was the strength of local manufacturers. Many countries with large automakers had local models as the best-selling vehicles, especially in Europe.

What do car consumers currently prefer? Currently, cars have a slight edge over trucks as the best-selling vehicles in the world.

Best-Selling Vehicles by Type:

Hatchback: 12
Sedan: 25
Sedan/Wagon: 1
Subcompact: 19
SUV: 20
Truck: 24
Van: 3

Re: Best selling cars worldwide | The denser the population, the smaller the car

I don't doubt the numbers, which are probably pulled from the official databases but this doesn't paint a correct picture of the market IMHO.

Examples :
- Just look at the top 25 cars from our October sales and see the difference. If the number 1 or 2 is edging across 5-6 cars behind it by 2-300 cars in a 15000+ cars/month number, its miniscule and insignificant if we are to take these numbers to form an opinion.
- The difference in the automotive landscape between UAE and Saudi Arabia isn't that of the Land Cruiser and the Accent. I would expect them to be very similar.
- Like pointed earlier the idea of population density to car size doesn't hold good in some cases in this infographic itself.
I checked their website and the time period is mentioned as "extended periods of time". Numbers are supposed to be specific
IMO they've generalized a lot but they're also not alone.

Capturing the data over a year, for the top 10-15 cars, split in to segments and usage(private/commercial) would bring us closer to an accurate representation but still far from it though.
Every country/market would have their own unique patterns which could spike the numbers like say the UAE taxi operators announcing going all hybrid would suddenly spike the sales of the Camry Hybrid for that year.

Well, it might be true but you can’t make that conclusion based on these twenty countries. There are two hundred countries!

It would make more sense to take the top 20 of population density countries and see what view emerges.

To some extend it might make sense, but take a look at some more western highly densely populated countries and you will see that average income might be a factor as well. And in some countries legislation is applicable that favours smaller cars and smaller engines.

Re: Best selling cars worldwide | The denser the population, the smaller the car

This is where the cars sold by the most important OEMs were produced in 2021.

OEMs like Ford, Geely, Mercedes, Renault, Stellantis, Tesla, depend quite a lot on a unique market. In contrast Toyota, Nissan, Honda have correctly distributed their production hubs across more regions.

The world’s best-selling cars in 2022:

An estimated 79 million new cars were sold around the world in 2022.

- 22 countries make up 75 per cent of the global sales market

- Europe continues to be a small-car-focused market, with the Peugeot 208 and Toyota Yaris each taking top spot in two countries. The only top-selling electric car on the list is the Tesla Model Y, which accounted for 10 per cent of total new-car sales in Norway.
