Hyundai becomes the world's third-largest automaker; Beats GM & Stellantis

Hyundai has now become the world's third-largest automaker by volume, trailing behind only Toyota and Volkswagen. The South Korean automaker beat the likes of General Motors & Stellantis for the first time since it was founded 55 years back.

While the company's growth stalled in 2020, Hyundai came back strong in 2021 when its production & sales saw a significant increase. It registered sales of 6.6 million cars worldwide, with Volkswagen selling 8.9 million and Toyota with 10.5 million units of sales.

Although Hyundai is still far from its rival Toyota, the Korean carmaker is on track to improve its sales even further in 2022. While this year's sales are yet to be tallied, reports state that Hyundai is on track to make 21 per cent more revenue than it did in 2021 - the highest average growth rate among major automakers.

The growth of Hyundai can also be attributed to its rising popularity in North America. The USA, Canada & Mexican markets accounted for 21 per cent of the total sales for Hyundai last year, which is higher than its home market, which accounted for 17 per cent.

Reports suggest that this popularity is said to rise further. Hyundai is currently looking to invest billions, as the company plans to build a new EV plant in the US. The South Korean automaker is also said to be vying to take over Ford's spot as the second-largest EV brand in the USA, behind only Tesla.

The company also rivals the more premium/luxury brands such as BMW, Audi & Mercedes-Benz with its Genesis models.

It's no small feat that Hyundai's made it to be the third largest car manufacturer in the world. But now there's talk that they've been breaking labor laws and I can't help but worry if that'll hurt their chances of success in the States.

The first para used the word "automaker" the second para uses the word "cars". So does the compilation of figures include commercial, military etc vehicles as well?

Yes, it does since VW group is ranked 2nd which has over 10 brands in its stable.
Generally when we talk about global sales, sister brands are also taken into consideration.

They deserve to be there. That's a long way since the first Hyundai Pony's were exported to the U S. and the consignments were sold but got brickbats owing to quality issues. Then Americans labelled these as "cheap Asian imports" a tag that stuck to the marque. They tasted some success in the 1990's and in another decade became a favourite brand for car buyers. The Sonata since a decade and a half has been among the Top 5 best selling sedans in the U. S. . A FB friend from the U K. posted his new i 10 two door hatch about 7-8 years ago, saying it was built there.

Hyundai has worked hard on its way to the top.
These results are no mean feats by Hyundai . A relatively unestablished brand from a S. Korean chaebol has come a long way. And we also need to check out the collapse of Daewoo, as the rival chaebol that crashed nearly two decades ago.

Re: Hyundai becomes the world's third-largest automaker; Beats GM & Stellantis

Their revenue per 'car' sold is still a good deal lower than say Stellantis et al. Their margins are rather low too, and have been for years. Their average transaction prices in the USA for example are much lower than GM and Stellantis, even if pickup trucks are excluded. Why since they're a somewhat 'discount brand' there, still. Ditto Europe I think.

They are among those that will suffer the globalization of Chinese firms as electrification spreads globally.

Certainly, technologically their achievements are great indeed. Less so in terms of 'original' or 'authentic' design IMHO.

But they barely earn their cost of capital (share prices flat over many years), high capex being their signature. They are a chaebol with quasi-sovereign backing and debt ratings.

The fact that South Korea is THE centre, ex-China, for EV battery and IT technology is to their great advantage going forward. Just don't expect Hyundai share prices to move up over the coming decade! They are very poor at efficient capital allocation and arguably, being a quasi-state-backed chaebol: perhaps don't care beyond a point. As long as they keep 'growing' in spread and prestige.

A very sound and eye-opening assessment of the financial health and strength of the various global auto firms as of now (i.e., after the 2008 global financial crisis, eurozone crisis, EM recession, and pandemic. Plus the rise of Tesla....with epic EV-related investment load ahead, etc.
