BMW beats Mercedes-Benz to retain global best-selling luxury brand title in 2022

BMW outsold its closest rival, Mercedes-Benz, in 2022. BMW narrowly beat Mercedes to retain its position as the best-selling premium car brand in the world.

BMW registered 21,00,692 cars last year, compared to Mercedes-Benz, which recorded 20,43,900 units of sales. Also, BMW, MINI & Rolls Royce, which make up the BMW Group, collectively registered 24,99,636 units of sales in 2022, which, however, is a 4.8% drop compared to the Group's sales in 2021. The drop in sales could be attributed to the supply bottleneck caused due to China's lockdown and the war in Ukraine.

Rolls Royce registered a 7.8% increase in sales with 6,021 units, while MINI recorded 2,92,923 units of sales - translating to a 3% drop. Having said that, sales of MINI's electric & PHEV offerings went up by 14.3% with 61,000 units.

According to reports, the BMW Group's full-electric cars sales registered a massive 108% increase with 2,15,755 units of sales, mainly led by the BMW i4 & iX offerings. BMW aims to have its fully-electric cars account for 15% of its production in 2023. Reports also suggested that BMW's electrified vehicles, combining EVs & plug-in hybrid models, saw a 35% rise, selling 3,72,956 units last year.

BMW's M Performance division also witnessed an 8.4 % increase with an all-time high of 1,77,257 units of sales.

Will have to see how it turns out here in India. I really feel that BMW should have released 'refreshed' normal 3 series. The gap between BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe and the BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine is huge and the other point is, Mercedes C class is getting out of reach as the years pass!!

Absence of normal 3 series makes Audi A4 a highly VFM buy!

That's a close fight if I ever saw one. However, like we are seeing with Mercedes India, Mercedes globally too is focusing more on profits, higher transaction prices & larger cars. There was some chatter that Benz is looking at exiting the entry-luxury segments.

In case anyone was wondering, Audi sold 1,614,231 cars in 2022. I don't think Lexus has announced 2022 figures yet, but 2021 sales were 760,012. Clearly shows where these 2 brands are in the pecking order.

I completely agree 70 plus lakhs on the road for a 3 series is absolutely ridiculous. Currently in the market for a replacement for my 2018 X1 and I am shocked with how expensive BMW's have become.

I am amazed that BMW India is not even 1% of its global sales. Their global sales are 21,00,692 while the India sales are 11,268 for the entire year. It's just 0.54%!

Shock yourself more and check out their sales in China.

That said, I am not at all surprised that their sales have dropped by 4.8% and I dont think the fall can be attributed to just supply chain issues - its the upstart EV's and among those chiefly it is Tesla especially in US and in 2023 Europe.
