MG's first sports car in decades, the Cyberster, has been spotted undergoing testing. The MG Cyberster comes in the form of a two-door drop-top sportscar, which will go up against the likes of the Alpine A110 and the BMW Z4.

The spy images of the upcoming sports car showcase a near-production-ready model. Although camouflaged, the sports car carries forward design elements from the Cyberster concept showcased a few years earlier. The two-door coupe gets a swoopy front end, a light bar at the rear, an integrated spoiler and large aerodynamic alloy wheels.



Although the interiors of the sports car are yet to be revealed, it is expected to come loaded with tech and features. The concept even showcased a yoke steering wheel, which may make it onto the production model.

The upcoming MG sports car will come powered by an all-electric powertrain. While details of this are yet unknown, reports do claim that the sports car will have 800 km of range (NEDC cycle), while being able to sprint from 0 - 100 km/h in around 3 seconds. The sports car will come with both rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations.

The final version of the MG sports car will be available in both right-hand & left-hand-drive formats, making it suitable for multiple international markets. The 'Cyberster' name is unlike to be used for the final production model.

Happy to read this. And happy that MG in some sense at least is going back to its roots. I do hope this new sports car is affordable and becomes accessible to the ‘mass consumer who also has been blessed with good taste and a comfortable wallet’.

The shape evokes memories of the originalMazda MX5 Miata, the newer version of the same as well as the more recent Fiat 124 Abarth.

This would be a really good halo car for the brand and would help increase the brand perspective, which has been fairly muddy.

Could this start a chain effect for the mass market brands to bring in more unique products? Would be interesting!

Official MG Cyberster design revealed in Chinese government filings

Leaked filings from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology have revealed the design of the new MG Cyberster, the firm’s upcoming electric sports car, long before the model was due to be unveiled.

Appearing in a set of images revealing its front and rear, the Cyberster is a sleek, soft-top sports car with two seats. The leaked filings suggest it will measure 4535mm long, 1913mm wide and 1329mm high.

Cyberster production was approved after the Shanghai motor show as a result of a successful crowdfunding campaign in which more than 5000 prospective buyers signed up to MG’s interactive Cybercube platform, allowing them to inform development of the production car.
