UK: Fast charging EVs more expensive than filling petrol

According to a report, the cost of charging EVs has soared in recent months, mainly driven by rising energy prices.

This has resulted in fast-charging EVs possibly becoming more expensive than filling petrol. As per a new analysis by AA, rapid charging points used by motorists on long drives are now nearly £10 more expensive than filling up petrol. The research showed that even slow charging an EV at a public charging station at peak times could be more expensive than refuelling a similar petrol car.

AA's head Jack Cousens stated that while pump prices are falling, the cost of electricity is on the rise. Although, he is hopeful that these rising prices could tail off sometime later this year.

Analysts compared the running cost of a 1.2-litre petrol Vauxhall Corsa with its electric-powered alternate, the e-Corsa. The e-Corsa was topped up using an 80-pence slow charger during peak times, resulting in a 16.18 pc cost per mile. The running cost of its 1.2-litre petrol counterpart came up to 14.45 pence per mile, meaning the traditional ICE model is cheaper to run per mile than the new EV version.

Reports state that if electric cars become more expensive to run than petrol or diesel vehicles, it could cause a major setback to the government's target of achieving net zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

Most major charging networks in the UK have introduced peak and off-peak charging rates. This, according to Cousens, is said to have been done to allow a constant supply of electricity throughout without overloading the grid.

AA's analysis also mentioned that the cheapest way to recharge an electric car is to plug it in at home, which because of the government's energy price cap, could bring down the cost per mile to as low as 7.64 pence.

This is music to my ears. About time we started into synth fuels and hydrogen engines.

Re: UK: Fast charging EVs more expensive than filling petrol

This is why I keep saying that EV's will only be limited to lifestyle choice and cannot become mainstream option at all.
With the ever increasing (exponential increase) demand/introduction/launch of EV's, and with the poor infra/energy consumption planning, this will create more chaos than expected. Of course, this UK situation it temporary though due to energy crisis (because of Russia-Ukraine war). Of course there is nothing on the horizon about the end of this war.

Are we really going from the Tiger tail to the Lion tail by only focusing on EV's?

Re: UK: Fast charging EVs more expensive than filling petrol

The only way to charge EVs conveniently & cheaply is at home. Install a cheap 15A plug (Why a cheap & simple 15A plug is just fine for home-charging your Electric Car) and let the magic happen overnight. If you want it a bit quicker, go for the ~7 kW charger offered by many OEMs (including Tata). Fast charging will always be expensive because it is installed by businesses to make money and there are serious costs. Real estate, maintenance and the crores of rupees it costs to get extremely powerful electricity connections. Fast charger stations run into a couple of crores.

Charge at home 99% of the time & use public fast chargers when travelling. But not everyone has the provision of home charging. The price they will pay for topping up batteries will always be comparable to petrol.

Re: UK: Fast charging EVs more expensive than filling petrol

An educated guess - Only a matter of time before the cost of every unit of electricity meant for residential use in India, rises rapidly. Benefits of lower (visible) emissions notwithstanding, every source of energy is a commodity.

Get people hooked onto a new source. Once the adoption becomes widespread, resulting in increased demand, jack up the prices at will. Never forget to dress it up with some nice candy floss of moral responsibility.

Unpopular opinion, but the global push towards EVs has less to do with 'environmental' considerations.
Just another avenue of grotesque wealth transfer from the masses, to the classes.

MSEDCL is proposing a hike in the electricity prices. The running cost which is advertised all the time while selling EVs is surely going up.

The battery which would need to be changed after a few years will also add to the overall expenses.
EVs are not the ultimate solution.
Disclaimer - My opinion is skewed as I am working in the offshore oil and gas industry.

Re: UK: Fast charging EVs more expensive than filling petrol

I'd take the news with a pinch of salt as the UK is currently going through a Cost of Living Crisis that is affecting the price of everything.
Electric Bills and Gas Bills have shot up as a result of the Russia Ukraine War and it's raised the price of Commodities and Electricity as well.
I'd want to know if there was a similar study conducted in the UK during the Pre Covid Period when everything was relatively stable and Compare the Results.

Re: UK: Fast charging EVs more expensive than filling petrol

There are many people who start charging their car at midnight at very cheap price of 7.5 pence/kwh. The peak electricity price of 80pence is taken in this report, also the peak power charges are due to the fossil fuels mix in the electricity, renewables are cheaper.

Looks like there is a celebration here, don't worry EVs are always cheaper to run than ICE, the physics is heavily biased towards EVs, you only tend to celebrate if you don't understand physics behind EVs and ICE.

And a good percentage of EV owners should also attempt to go solar for charging (and other needs). Driving the delta cost of electricity for charging towards zero. I am quite sure none of us can produce/refine our own petrol/diesel.

Fast charging is turning out to be the electricity equivalent of premium grade fuel, not a necessity but some wouldn't mind paying for it all the same

Once there are enough EVs, Governments will have to figure some way to generate revenue from them.

I doubt running costs will be any cheaper than ICE cars.

They’ll probably start charging for PUC.

Jokes aside, they’ll just jack up road taxes for EVs stating congestion tax and then new bandwagon would be shift to public transport from EVs.

Re: UK: Fast charging EVs more expensive than filling petrol

UK has the typical english weather, which is mostly cloudy. It Solar power generation is only around 4% and for roof top installation, it will take them 20 years to break even due to poor solar irradiation and high installation expenses.

They even have plans to import Solar energy all the way from Morroco 3800km via under sea cable.

Where as in India, Solar is going to be over 50% share by 2030. Many states in South India already get over 50% of their power from Solar.

So while electricity price will keep increasing, it will for the most part be still cheaper then importing crude oil, which is a double whammy due to further outflow of forex reserves.

Re: UK: Fast charging EVs more expensive than filling petrol

Maharashtra MSEB looking to hike electricity tariff by 37% from 01 April 2023.

Not surprising at all and was bound to happen sooner than later.

So EV will be limited to city usage only.

Since juicing on highways will cost same as petrol and be time consuming as well.

What if government takes away all the subsidy like zero road tax, FAME subsidy, etc; that would make EV expensive and no more value proposition.

Lets not forget that from mining to manufacturing, the emission are higher for an EV compared to ICE cars.

EV bubble came to an end sooner.

Future belongs to ICE & hydrogen powered cars.
