Toyota Hilux pickup converted into an off-grid Adventure Camper

The Japanese company, Direct Cars, has created a new BR75 SUV Adventure Camper based on the Toyota Hilux.

The BR75 motorhome is based on the dual-cab version of the Hilux GR Sport pickup truck. The company replaces the rear flatbed with a large aerodynamically-shaped extension, allowing it to seat 5 passengers and sleep 2 adults and 2 children.

The design of the extension is well-integrated with the Hilux. The rear cabin comes with a door inside, allowing users to access what the company calls the "living area" from the pickup's cabin. This prevents users from having to step out of the vehicle at any time. The "living area" comes with wooden panels, tile-style floors and interior lighting. The extension has a pop-up roof portion, allowing passengers to stand straight up while also allowing more light to enter the cabin.

In terms of the interiors, the living space comes with a large dining area with a foldable table and two bench seats. The area can further be converted into a double bed measuring 2,300 mm in length for adults. There is also a second fold-out bed measuring 1,660 mm for 2 kids. The space has a window on each side and plenty of storage compartments above.

Another interesting feature is that the motorhome comes with a full-size home air-conditioning system, with the external unit placed under the rear bumper. There is also a small room at the back with a shower, waterproof floor, drain, sink, mirror and a slide-out counter table. This room can be accessed from both inside and outside the vehicle, allowing the user to also store their wet or dry clothing.

Apart from the interior facilities, Direct Cars has also equipped the Hilux Camper with a large 200Ah secondary battery, which can be charged either during driving or via roof-mounted 200W solar panels. The Adventure Camper also comes with an 85-litre water tank, along with a separate 20-litre clean water tank and a 45-litre drain tank. There are power outlets all across the interior of the living space, along with 2 external outlets at the rear. All this allows the Camper to survive completely off-grid if necessary.

The BR75 Adventure Camper is offered in 2 variants, one based on the Hilux Z and the other being the fully-loaded GR-Sport. The Hilux Z trim costs $83,931, while the top-spec Camper retails at $95,121. Customers can further customise the camper with a few optional features, including off-road wheels and tyres.

Re: Toyota Hilux pickup converted into an off-grid Adventure Camper

I am puzzled why they went about building one of these on a Hilux platform. It isn't suited for a two step floor layout with the back deck or load area at a higher level than the cabin.

The current 6th generation Hiace is more suitable for building a self contained campervan. This platform is so popular (for generations) that there are several shops that take up customization of the Hiace as its easy to work on. The only win I can see with the Hilux is that is can probably head a little off road whereas the Hiace cannot.

Compare this Hiace build and you kinda feel there is a better sense of space management.

I am confused, the rear design has a lot of impact on the departure angle
How come this is a adventure camper (offroad) with that elongated rear structure

Re: Toyota Hilux pickup converted into an off-grid Adventure Camper

Why do I feel like it will pop a wheelie as soon as it tries to go uphill The rear overhang is too much and too low that taking it anywhere even mildly challenging looks impossible. You are bound to get beached or worse, that rear cabin could get severely damaged. Don't know why they didn't try building the RV on a single cab version. The rear overhang could have been reduced a lot and it would have been easier to take it off road. People have been doing it for years especially on the 79 series LC pickup
