And news comes in this morning that irrespective of the takeover by Tata, LandRover is making inroads into the Indian market. They plan to assemble the Discovery as well as look at army supplies!

Any mention of the Range Rover or it's sport version being assembled?

No they only talked about land rover discovery for the military I believe. This is not related to the Tata takeover.

Discovery for the military? Not likely - more likely to be the Defender.

That is a left handed compliment, right?

The article on Economic Times also stated that Vehicles Factory, Jabalpur is also making some vehicle called Stallion. All the manufactueres - M&M, Tatas, LR, even Firodias, will be competing against VFJ.

BTW, anybody know what happened to that civilian version of the Jonga? The real Jonga was a sight to behold!!

The main reason for the flop was actually the pricing. The CityRover was actually priced higher than a Panda, which was incidentally very famous. Tata however wanted Rover to come down on the price to which Rover wasn't very keen.

Nope -IMHO The miltary does a lot for very low salaries compared to the real world. Their pensions are absymal. Add to that political nonsense.

My father in law was a very senior ranking person

Now lets not go off topic further

Tata to own Jaguar and Land Rover

It looks like the deal is almost over and we are approaching the D-day when this announcement is likely to be made (Mar-26). It looks like they have reached an agreement with Ford on all the outstanding issues.

Tata to acquire Jaguar and Land Rover on Wednesday

Tata to acquire Jaguar and Land Rover on Wednesday

------ Article from the Mint news paper -------

In another potential boost to the two brands’ future, Fiat’s chief executive said he was interested in working with them if the sale to Tata goes through

PTI

London: US motor company Ford is expected to announce on Wednesday the sale of Jaguar and Land Rover to India’s Tata Motors at an estimated cost of $2 billion.
The agreement will include a pledge by Ford to contribute to the two brands’ pension fund, and by Tata to continue buying engines from Ford - both sensitive points with trade unions.
“There will be an announcement tomorrow, assuming everything gets signed off,” an unnamed person close to the deal was quoted as saying by Financial Times.
Ford is not commenting on the timing of the announcement, but recently said there were “no major roadblocks” preventing it.
Tata said its discussions with Ford were ongoing, but declined to comment.
In another potential boost to the two brands’ future, Fiat’s chief executive said he was interested in working with them if the sale to Tata goes through.
“I think I would be more than pleased to collaborate with Tata in terms of Jaguar/Range Rover, if in fact it ends up being owned by them,” Sergio Marchionne told the Times.
Ratan Tata sits on Fiat’s board, and Fiat and Tata produce cars, engines and transmissions together in India. Early in Ford’s long-running auction of the two brands, Fiat turned down an invitation to bid for them.
