Next-gen Jeep Wrangler will be an EV and offer even better off-road capabilities

According to media reports, Jeep CEO Christian Meunier has confirmed that the next-generation Wrangler off-roader will come with a pure-electric powertrain.

Jeep already has an electrified version of the off-roader in the form of the Wrangler 4xe. Meunier stated that in the first quarter, 38% of all Wranglers sold were the 4xe models. He added that by the year-end, Jeep expects this percentage to go up to 50 - 60%. The company boss mentioned that customers aren't being forced to purchase the 4xe variant; instead, they are themselves realising that they can visit the petrol station less by driving the off-roader in electric mode for up to 20-25 miles (up to 40 km).

Speaking about its off-road capabilities, Meunier explained that Jeep will push the next-gen Wrangler EV's Trail Rating to 12 out of 10; meaning it will be even more capable off-road than its current ICE-powered version.

The next-gen Jeep Wrangler EV will be based on Stellantis' large-STLA architecture. Reports state that the Wrangler EV is expected to make its debut by 2027 at the earliest.

A jeep is supposed to be for going to places that are off the beaten track.
IMHO, making it an EV will handicap it yuuugely on this front.

I think best to stay with a Hybrid option. Pure EV may handicap the driver or sportsperson off road more than anything.
Unless they build charging infra in all off road trails, which would kind of be difficult I think.
Of course if they up the range capabilities it will be best. But will they be able to?

I think an Electric Wrangler makes a lot of business sense.

- The Wrangler is hugely popular in the USA, just like the Thar is in India. EVs are a customer expectation now.

- 90% of Jeep Wranglers don't go offroading, just like Thars. For those using it primarily on-road, an EV option is a must. For the 10% who want to offroad, Jeep will always sell a petrol Wrangler.

- When offroading, an EV can have advantages. Instant torque, no issue with water getting into your engine or alternator, software can fine-tune the exact torque & power characteristic going to each wheel, no overheating (Petrol Thars overheat under extreme offroading), better reliability & less mechanical bits that can break etc.

The main problem I see is this = EVs drop range like crazy in hard-driving. Running out of charge in the middle of nowhere means you are finished. Bigger batteries & better battery technology will take care of this to an extent. Also, in offroading, you aren't always driving with the accelerator buried into the floor. But yes, the fast depletion of range under hard driving is the biggest handicap of electric offroaders. Downside of bigger batteries is weight, which is a penalty while offroading.

After 13 fires, Jeep recalls nearly 200,000 Wrangler and Grand Cherokee PHEVs.

Owners are being told to park outside and not charge their Wrangler 4xe or Grand Cherokee 4xe.
