Tesla whistleblower leaks around 100 GB of confidential data to a German media outlet

According to media reports, a German newspaper has received over 100 gigabytes of leaked confidential data about Tesla from a whistleblower.

The leaked data, dubbed "Tesla Files", is said to contain 23,000 files which show how Tesla has failed to protect data from customers, employees and business partners. The data also contains more than 100,000 names of former and current employees and also the social security number of company CEO Elon Musk. The files also include private email addresses, phone numbers, salaries of employees, bank details of customers and even secret details from production.

The German newspaper Handelsblatt also reported that the leaked files contain thousands of complaints from customers related to the company's driver-assistance systems and information on 1,000 crashes in connection to the Autopilot system from recent years. There are also said to be 2,400 complaints of unintended acceleration and 1,500 complaints of braking problems which include 383 cases of phantom braking and 139 cases of emergency braking.

As per reports, the leaked complaints date back from 2015 all the way to March 2022. While most of the complaints are from the USA, there are a few from Asia and Europe as well.

The German newspaper even confirmed the authenticity of the data from the Fraunhofer Institute of Secure Information Technology. Reports state that Tesla did attempt to stop the media outlet from reporting the leaked data, even threatening legal action.

According to Handelsblatt, a lawyer for Tesla stated that the whistleblower was a "disgruntled former employee", who abused his access to get information. The lawyer is said to have stated that the EV maker would take legal action against the whistleblower.

Shame on the individual who reinforced his company' making him disgruntled in the first place. It shows how unprofessional one is to do such a cheap thing. Eat the hand that feeds your family!

For those who are going to say 'Tesla' should have better Tech controls in place... you can design firewalls, block UBS ports, cancel laptops and have desktop only office; but you cannot stop a human's mouth from sitting with a competitor/media house and blurt everything out.

Remember, a individual with access to secret information has more knowledge than a 100GB HDD.

I side with Tesla. Any and all employers can be an ass to work with, walk out when you cannot take it anymore.

German auto lobby and the press seem to try below the belt approach as they are struggling to compete with Tesla’s software defined cars.

If the same leak occured in VW, BMW or Merc, then the Handelsblatt would have said it’s an unethical employee going rogue. But now that unethical employee becomes a ‘Whisteblower’. German Auto lobby and their double standards!!

The entire "data" formula was wrong. This will continue. We're looking at devices that collect data for useless or no reasons, or just because they don't want to test products themselves, so hey, let's use customers as guinea pigs.
Some or the other time, data from smart TVs, smartwatches, smart devices, etc will continue to leak, or cause problems.

Some time in future, some rogue government might enslave their own citizens on basis of data. Elections will be predecided, manipulated, etc, etc.

On the other hand, we the common people continue to have no choice. Can you own and drive the Tesla witout data sharing? or even use an Android or Windows 10-11 laptop without sharing meta data?
Its either that or stone age for us.

Well said, sir. It's disheartening to witness how some individuals resort to such low levels. The person responsible for leaking this information should be ashamed of themselves and maybe even charged legally for doing so.
