3rd-generation Volkswagen Tiguan, now unveiled

Volkswagen has been working on updating its Tiguan for the global markets for some time now. The new third-generation iteration of the SUV has been spied on multiple occasions with VW also having released official teasers for the same.

Now, ahead of its expected global debut, the third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan has been spied yet again, however, this time the SUV can be seen completely undisguised on the streets of Slovenia's capital, during a video shoot for its advert.

As seen from the spy images, the new Tiguan comes with a complete redesign, compared to the outgoing model. The new iteration of the SUV features a more rounded-off styling, especially around the headlights and tail lights. The front fascia can be seen with a gloss black trim with a light bar connecting the integrated DRLs. The rear also features full-width LED lights and are much slimmer than on the current model. The SUV also features wheel arch protectors and plenty of chrome elements all around.

The 3rd-gen Tiguan is said to measure 4,551 mm in length, 1,939 mm in width and has a wheelbase of 2,681 mm. The new-gen SUV will be offered in a single size; instead of the Standard (SWB) and AllSpace (LWB) versions available on the current models. The current Tiguan AllSpace version will be replaced by an all-new model, called the Tayron.

Details of the interiors are yet to be revealed. Although, reports do suggest the new iteration will come with all the latest bells and whistles, in terms of safety, comfort and connectivity features.

The new third-gen VW Tiguan will be part of the brand's MQB EVO architecture and will internationally be offered with a range of powertrain options. This includes petrol, diesel, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains.

re: 3rd-generation Volkswagen Tiguan, now unveiled

The Tiguan is starting to look like any mainstream SUV. I can see a lot of inspiration from recent American SUVs from the Ford and GM families. The Tiguan has lost the edginess which set it apart from its competitors.

In attempt to go more mainstream and be appealing to a broader base of customers, VW is risking losing its design identity - which is based on bold, yet simple and elegant designs with more straight lines versus curves - designs that feel fresh for decades. Look at the current Gen Tiguan for example - it still feels fresh after 6 years! On the other hand, SUVs such as the Ford Endeavour (which had more curvy surfaces) and Toyota Fortuner, which appeared around the same time, feel dated and old.

re: 3rd-generation Volkswagen Tiguan, now unveiled

Somehow, this reminds me of the MG Hector :(. The Tiguan was on a very short list of cars I wanted to upgrade to, now I’m not sure if it’s going to stay on.

I’m just hoping that the VW group does not mess up the next gen Kodiaq like this.

re: 3rd-generation Volkswagen Tiguan, now unveiled

The third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan has debuted in Europe.

It will come to the United States next year, riding on the long-wheelbase version of the vehicle's body.
The model rides on the MQB Evo platform with front-wheel drive as standard and all-wheel drive as an option.

Quote:
There are two plug-in hybrid options with total outputs of 201 horsepower (150 kilowatts) or 268 hp (200 kW). These models also use a 19.7-kilowatt-hour battery that can provide an electric-only range as high as 62 miles (100 kilometers). The AC charger now supports 11 kW, and the car can accept up to 50 kW when connected to a DC fast charger.

There are also mild-hybrid-equipped choices. The turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder hooks up to a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and 48-volt starter/generator. Cylinder deactivation can let the engine run on two pistons.

The third-gen Tiguan also offers a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, making either 201 hp (150 kW) or 262 hp (195 kW).

Turbodiesel options still exist, too. There's a 2.0-liter tune making 148 hp (110 kW) or 190 hp (142 kW).

The tech upgrades include an improved adaptive chassis control system as available tech. It works with the electronic differential locks. There are also two-valve shocks with an adapted control algorithm.

Inside, VW introduces a new digital instrument display layout and an updated infotainment system. The company's MIB graphic design follows what it already uses in the ID.4, ID.5, and ID.7. Drivers can pick between the view modes: Classic, Progressive, Navigation, and R-Line.

Are fog-lamps obsolete these days? All new cars seem to omit the fog-lamps.

re: 3rd-generation Volkswagen Tiguan, now unveiled

VW made a Hyundai (or a Grand Vitara from rear in the new Tiguan)! Interesting to see Europeans (now VW too, with generally conservative and boring (in my opinion)) going the swoopy and curvy way like the Asians such as Hyundai and Kia. The rear looks much like any other mass market SUV, especially the Grand Vitara. Loved the car interior with big screen and innovative but functional volume knob placement. Connected driver display and infotainment would have been nicer though
My take - I am liking this new design direction that VW is taking. I like bling, flash and aggressive designs. I especially like the puffed up silhouette, around the rear below D pillar. It reminds me of first gen Cayenne in rear three quarters/haunches.
I am not sure how this design approach will be taken by the brand’s fans who adore their understated designs of the past.
I hope the soon to revealed VW Tayron (that replaces Tiguan in India) follows the new design language and is even more mean and beefy looking

New Tiguan details as presented by VW,

- The new plug-in hybrid engines allow an electric range of about 100 kilometers and fast charging in direct current
- New interior with clearly structured Digital Cockpit, infotainment display, head-up display and intuitive multifunction control to enhance the driving experience and based on customer feedback
- The new DCC Pro adaptive chassis control system, a technological masterpiece of superior class, guarantees maximum comfort and maximum agility

Quote:
In addition, AC charging will be faster on all eHybrid versions, and DC fast charging will also be possible as standard for the first time. A cleanly designed Digital Cockpit based on the MIB4, the fourth-generation modular infotainment system, offers the highest level of information and brings a greater number of digital services and applications on board. The operating concept has been designed to always be intuitive. In addition, new systems such as the pneumatic massage function for the front seats2 or IQ matrix headlights. LIGHT HD2 -used for the first time in the Tiguan- are derived from the premium Touareg model. The new DCC Pro adaptive chassis control2 Optimises comfort and dynamism. The latest generation of Park Assist It allows to automate the entry and exit of parking spaces.
Expressive design and improved aerodynamics.
The compact SUV features a completely new design. It highlights the front of the vehicle, powerful appearance, with very flat LED headlights and a horizontal strip covered with glass. The radiator grille openings are now located on the outer sides of the bumper, where air intakes ensure optimal air circulation. The cleanly designed front highlights that the drag coefficient has improved from 0.33 to 0.28. This silhouette is characterized by athletic shoulders over the wheel arches (with wheels up to 20 inches). A new horizontal LED strip accentuates the unmistakable rear of the Tiguan.

New generation of cabin and infotainment system.
The interior of the Tiguan features a completely new concept and design. It stands out for its high standards of materials and workmanship. In addition, the new cabin landscape is intuitive to use, tightly integrated, and has a clean and intelligent design. The modules include the new Digital Cockpit (digital instruments with anti-reflective coating in landscape tablet format), an infotainment screen that measures up to 38 centimeters (15 inches) and has an all-new menu structure and graphics, a new head-up display2 (projections on the windscreen) and a new multifunction control with integrated OLED screen. This new rotary knob with its own mini display can be used to select the driving one, the volume of the radio or also the colors of the backlighting. Moreover, numerous vehicle and infotainment functions can be easily adjusted using natural language with the new IDA voice assistant.

Efficient range of propellers.

With the MQB evo platform, various types of propulsion can be implemented in the Tiguan. For example, there will be turbodiesel engines (TDI), turbo petrol engines (TSI), petrol turbo engines with mild hybridization (eTSI) and plug-in hybrid systems (eHybrid), which in the future will be offered exclusively in combination with the automatic gearbox (DSG). As in the Volkswagen ID. models and the new Passat, the gear position will be changed by means of a selector located to the right of the steering wheel, whose operating principle is very intuitive. The selector is turned forward to "D" to move forward and backward to "R" to reverse, while the parking brake is activated by pressing the side of the selector. All Tiguan models also have paddles behind the steering wheel.

HD headlights on the Tiguan for the first time.
The Tiguan is the first MQB platform model to be launched with IQ matrix headlights. LIGHT HD of new development. The interactive lighting system was also developed in parallel for the Touareg, so both SUVs share the same headlight design. HD stands for High Definition, i.e. high resolution of light sources. In the case of the Tiguan, a total of 38,400 multipixel LEDs (19,200 multipixel LEDs per headlight) illuminate the road and surroundings to a whole new level and thus improve comfort and safety.

Largest trunk on the Tiguan.
The new Tiguan has increased its length by about three centimeters. The height, width and wheelbase remain virtually identical to those of its predecessor. The boot capacity of the new generation demonstrates how well space is used: although the SUV is only slightly longer, its boot capacity has increased by 37 litres, up to 652 litres (when loaded up to the height of the rear seat backrests).

Re: 3rd-generation Volkswagen Tiguan, now unveiled

While I welcome the changes/upgrades inside-out, I am just concerned about how the car will be positioned in India.
The current generation Tiguan is little overpriced at 42L ONR for the only trim offered in India. With this new Tiguan, the cost will definitely go up as per the norms. So eventually this will enter into the 7 seater Kodiaq territory (which in India is any day a better and bigger car than a Tiguan). And with no diesel, no 7 seating, with all the bells and whistles, it looks the toughest challenge for VW India to position this for an already low seller.

The new Kodiaq that will be launched next year will also get a significant price bump so I dont think their prices will coincide.

Re: 3rd-generation Volkswagen Tiguan, now unveiled

This is obviously subjective, but I just can't bring myself to appreciate this interior after seeing how high Skoda has raised the bar with the new Kodiaq. Overall, the car just seems somewhat lacking in character (something not true with the current Tiguan).

I'll reserve further judgement until I can see one in the flesh, though.
