Re: Amazon to sell Cars online | Will it work?

Leave aside Amazon US, I believe this was already attempted in Amazon India by Chevrolet for the Trailblazer before their exit from India.

If I remember correctly even Mini Cooper did something of the sort. Perhaps it was a bit early at the time. But it may very well work now.

Re: Amazon to sell Cars online | Will it work?

There is a large retailer with a successful car sales program in the US. Costco. If you want a mainstream car at a fair price, and don't want to go through the whole bargaining process, the Costco buying process may be for you.

If Amazon is planning to pull off something similar, it's still very doable.

Re: Amazon to sell Cars online | Will it work?

In India it may not get that popularity :

Buying car is no less than an event for Indians:

In our country buying car is still an ambition. It is a big ticket purchase and in most of the households Car purchase happens once in a decade. Therefore, people do like to visit Showrooms, get the actual feel of cars, take family members to showroom to have their opinions and then finalize the car. This also makes the entire buying process memorable.

Online buying of car is not as smooth as it sounds

Customer is well aware nowadays and can save more on On-Road Price when dealing directly with a showroom executive. Eg Arranging Insurance by customer, Saying no to unnecessary Accessories and services.

Also, there is minimal scope of PDI in case of online buy whereas in physical buying process atleast a customer can point out some visible defect/dent.

During online buy handling these points may be cumbersome.

I have only tried this once. The Costco program is no different from other online plays like TrueCar collecting buyer's info and passing it on to dealers in the zip code. Dealers have an online listing price that they they do not try to have their sales staff spend energy on. You can walk in and buy it at this online listing price. Some times you have dealers have additional promotional discount for Costco members, and that is usually $500 (with some strings attached).

For Amazon to be successful, it has to be something more than this. I think the direct sales model of EVs would be a great opportunity.
