BMW X1 scores 2.5 stars in Green NCAP test: Tesla Model S & MG5 EV also tested

Green NCAP tests are conducted to assess the environmental impact of cars, irrespective of their powertrain.

The testing agency recently conducted and published the assessment results of the Tesla Model S, MG5 EV and the petrol-powered BMW X1. While the two electric cars received good ratings, the petrol-powered SUV scored a relatively low rating.

The BMW X1 used for the Green NCAP tests was the entry-level sDrive 18i, powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 134 BHP without any form of electrification. Being a petrol-powered car, the X1 obtained a low score on the Greenhouse Gas Index due to its CO2 emissions, securing 2.1/10 points. However, the X1 scored strongly in the Clean Air Index with a 7.7/10, thanks to its strong exhaust after treatment. This helped the BMW X1 achieve an overall average of 45%, earning it a 2.5-star rating.

The Tesla Model S and the MG5 EV secured a 5-star rating in the Green NCAP tests, with an average of 97% and 95%, respectively. The Model S tested was the AWD dual motor variant with a 100 kWh battery. The car secured a perfect 10/10 score for the Clean Air Index, while managing an impressive 9.4/10 for energy efficiency and 9.7/10 for the greenhouse gas index.

Similarly, the MG5 EV secured a 10/10 for clean air index, while energy efficiency and greenhouse gas index were 9.2/10 and 9.5/10, respectively.

Absolutely ridiculous test. How can anyone pit an electric car against ICE and then say that ICE is less green? :-D

Besides this, will they go into the source of electricity, which will vary from country to country?

This test seems more like surreptitious advertising for EVs.

Cheers,

Jay

Yes, quite a ridiculous comparison. A petrol car emits more tailpipe emissions than an EV? Colour me shocked
Maybe they should do one that compares also the environmental impacts of mining rare earth minerals etc

EVs are the future but it will take a while for electric vehicle tech to mature enough to become sustainable.

The Green NCAP framework does not just include emissions. It is all encompassing and includes measurements throughout the life cycle of a vehicle - Extraction of the raw materials used for manufacturing, Actual manufacturing of the vehicle, Distribution, Usage of the vehicle & Recyclability.

So, it's not just to compare EVs. All cars go through the above Life Cycle and can be put through the paces of this framework. Which is why you see ICE cars also being included.

On the contrary, I would like them to also test one with Diesel engine, in this case 18d.
Just to see how it fares on the Green NCAP.

Reference:
BMW X1 sDrive18d--> CO2 emissions, combined in g/km:130
BMW X1 sDrive18i --> CO2 emissions, combined in g/km:145

Green NCAP website says something else:

Quote:
It is a single, overall rating that summarises a vehicle’s performance in Clean Air, Energy Efficiency and Greenhouse Gas emissions. a car with a high rating will be clean, cheaper to run and contribute less to the greenhouse effect in comparison to similar sized car with a lower rating.

They have introduced Life Cycle Assessment criteria but they are not part of the star ratings, rather a separate “LCA Award” they recently started handing out. I believe they did not integrate it with the star rating because of some controversy surrounding the data they were using (in fact there were accusations of them being an anti-EV lobby)

May be tests between various petrol cars and diesel cars will be interesting.
I don't feel its correct to compare EVs to ICE cars.

I stand corrected. I somehow thought that the Life Cycle Assessment was the basis for the rating. Thanks.
