Toyota and Subaru to make joint sports car

Toyota and Subaru have announced that they are investigating a jointly-designed small sports car.
The car would be made by Toyota, but powered by a Subaru flat-four engine. That means that it will probably not be based on any existing Toyota - Subaru's unique engine will not easily fit in any chassis designed for a conventional transverse engine. The idea is to sell the car at a low price of under US $ 17,000 - although prices in Japan are lower than Europe, so we should not get too excited at the idea of a very cheap sports car coming here.
Toyota now owns 8.7% of Subaru and is keen to look at ways of taking advantage of its position.

Makes sense, gives Subaru something for their volumes which would not be worth Toyota's time

That will be a great move.
Who's going to do the suspension and drivetrain setup of this car? Hope Subaru handles that part too. And what about an AWD?
Oh no! Am I asking too much?

This may also be Toyota's way of extending support to its lesser-fortunate home manufacturers.

Is this the same thing? Its supposed to be the replacement for the Scion tC, and a spiritual successor to the AE86 corolla. Cheap, RWD, 120 bhp, and under $12,000. The minute they confirm they are going to sell such a car in the US, I am going to be finding ways of saving up $12,000.

Dude 12000$ is a bit of a stretch even the Honda Fit isnt that cheap. You know what I'm saying right?

But even if its priced @ 15K i'd say its fantastic. And i see your point here

By the way Nissan is gearing up for this a RWD to compete with this AE86 successor in a similar price range. Its supposed to a be spiritual successor to the Silvia (atleast the pics say that). Its almost like light weight RWD wars! Long live cheap RWD and down with FWD pocket ripping GTI's.

Here's the Link and below is a rendering of the car.

They're speculating it to be based off the Nissan Urge Concept Car.
Its just concept wars so far! I hope they get rid of those heavy FWD with loads of understeer and really come up with cheap RWD's which are really more able and a good platform to tune on Fingers crossedd!

Oh and by the way they're speculating its the same thing. It'll be powered by a 2litre boxer engine. NA I guess. Not difficult to make it NOT NA with all those WRX turbos lying around!

Yeah you're right 12k and more importantly, 2200 lbs, are too much of a stretch. Even the Aveo weighs ~2400lbs. But if they do have the b@ll$ to make it, I can safely say that Toyota has officially "GOT IT" unlike VW who are making things more and more, um, boring.

Even Nissan is making bullcr@p these days. Where is the lightweight, chuckable and FUN 240Z of yesterday?

I would prefer the engine from the Subaru (as this case suggests) and handling of a Subaru and a Toyota Badge. Asking price of under 10 lakhs in India.

I'd like that as well. Coming to think of it, if there' were some flaws even there'll be tonnes of after market parts for these cars including suspension components to benefit! Dont you think.
