IIHS wants rear automatic emergency braking on all new cars; Reduces collisions by 29%

The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) believes all cars should come with rear emergency braking as standard. David Harkey, President of IIHS, states that the technology is "more effective in preventing crashes than other types of solutions."

The agency tested eight cars, of which the rear AEB tech was standard on only one of them, the Mitsubishi Outlander. It also reported that only 23% of the new MY2023 models offered the tech as standard, while it was an optional feature on another 32% of the models.

As per IIHS data, cars equipped with rear AEB saw a 29% fall in claims for damages to other vehicles and a 9% fall in claims for damages to itself. It also reported that nearly 30% of the collision claims in 2022 were for rear-impact crashes.

Rear AEB, as per IIHS, is just one of the technologies that will help reduce crashes. The agency noted that a combination of tech, which includes rear cameras, parking sensors and rear AEB, could help reduce 78% of the crashes while backing up.

* Car moves slowly in reverse.
* We have 360 cameras, all around sensors, rear traffic alert.

I'm not sure how can someone possibly hit something in reverse while those sensors and cameras going off like tui-tui continuously. It takes additional level of stupidity I guess.

With the level of stupidity on Indian roads, This is very much needed.

I feel like rear AEB implementation will hinder parking in tight spaces. I always find more space to back or turn even with the highest Parking sensor alert.
