Review: The All-New Nissan Patrol (Y63) | Above the Ordinary - Part 1

Introduction

Fate can sometimes throw unbelievable opportunities, and for me, one such opportunity was to be able to experience an out-of-the-ordinary vehicle that has barely yet been seen on the roads - the All-New Nissan Patrol code named Y63.

Many firsts around this experience

This experience is the first of a kind for me in many ways

1. first invitation to be part of a car reception committee outside India
2. one of the first cars of this shade to be delivered in the UAE
3. first time I've unboxed a car ever
4. highest number of pics that I've clicked per unit time
5. largest car that I've sat in after the Dodge Laramie
6. first time I won't be able to post a thread in one shot - as there is so much to showcase

re: Review: The All-New Nissan Patrol (Y63) | Above the Ordinary - Part 1

How this ownership story began

A close family member was looking to part with his 2018 BMW X5; the next target car in mind was the All-New Mazda CX-90, and serious considerations were made around this. While this was on, I received a message one evening to state, "Gaadi book kiya"(car's been booked), make and model is the surprise element." After some time, comes another message," Beast of the Middle East, if you can figure out". Although there are many beasts in the Middle East, the most sought after one is what we are talking about, and I guessed right.

Variant selected and reasoning behind that

Moving from a twin turbo set up on the BMW X5, this was not an easy option. However, considering the capital, use case and the oomph, the buyer decided on an SE Platinum City.

Availability

Being the All-New Patrol, there was obviously a large number of bookings, and the only chance of an early delivery was

a) choose an exterior shade that isn't white or black
b) choose an interior shade that isn't white, beige or tan

I was not personally happy with the final choice of a) and b) as brochures and youtube videos showed them not-so-real, but the pic of the car on the opening post should have given you all an idea of how the forest green actually looks - just stunning!!

Fortune smiles

Despite choosing a "not-so-popular" shade, delivery of the vehicle was still a challenge, but suddenly, things started moving with the intervention of a big man viz. the owner of a dealership. Delivery was promised within a month of booking as the shade combination wasn't a popular choice.

Long long ago, I was told by the buyer, " My next car will be received with you in attendance". When the BMW X5 got sold (that was a saga in itself), and delivery of the Patrol was round the corner, I was summoned to be there. Freedom from my work schedule, availability of good tickets, and issuance of the visa - all happened like clockwork.

D-Day and Some Bonus Sights

My relative and I were finally headed to the showroom, in another city. On reaching the dealership, the car that we were to receive as tucked away inside. What I saw there was something I couldn't afford to ignore - the Nissan Patrol Super Safari (Y61) and the erstwhile Nissan Patrol (Y62) in the V8 avatar. The mighty 8ers are on their way out. Less prose, more pictures around the Y61 and Y62, both built in Japan.

re: Review: The All-New Nissan Patrol (Y63) | Above the Ordinary - Part 1

Receiving the car, first level "unboxing" and first drive

The car was there - all ready, in full plastic. There were just 2 Sales Advisors and two other folks at the showroom. Delivery of the car (or shall I say receiving the car) was an absolutely routine affair - all features were explained by the SA but apart from that, no celebration, no cake, no covers, no drama, nothing. We carried the registration plates with us, which were summarily fitted, and once that was done, I asked for the SA and my relative to pose for a picture. Else, he'd have just taken the keys and driven off.

While driving home from the dealership, we didn't spot a single Y63 Patrol on the roads - in fact, till date, we haven't seen one anywhere. At our pit stop, curious onlookers came and congratulated. Some Y62 Patrol owners were pretty impressed with the shade - both exterior and the upholstery.

Exploring the All-New Patrol

Unboxing is generally done to get to the actual product purchased. In this case, I'd call unboxing the phase where the plastics on the door panels, seats were taken off and more features of the product were explored. Here are a few bits (some are variant specific)

1. 3.8L V6 NA petrol and 3.5L V6 Twin turbo petrol engine options
2. Gear lever done away with - it is now P R N D with M function for paddle shifts
3. 4WD on buttons
4. Exceptionally crafted quilted leather seats - Burgundy seats in the car featured here
5. 28.6" monolith display (two displays of 14.3" each)
6. Klipsch 12 speaker premium audio
7. EZ Flex second row seats
8. Adaptive air suspension (in the LE Titanium and above variants so could not be covered here)
9. Damping Acoustic glass in the front for supreme silence in the cabin
10. Driver Assist
11. Invisible Hood View (covered in the previous post)
12. ProPILOT driving assistant
13. Infrared sensor for biometric climate control
14. Remote door control and remote engine start
15. Massage seats

Some pictures of the inside:

The first thing that comes to my mind when I hear Nissan Patrol:

What an absolute beast of a machine! Looks really gorgeous too, one of the very few cars whose newer generation one looks better (IMO) than the previous generation!

Re: Review: The All-New Nissan Patrol (Y63) | Above the Ordinary - Part 1

Nissan has always been more adventurous with the Patrol than Toyota has been with the LC300. While the exterior seems like an evolution, the interior certainly feels a class apart as the previous gen had started getting dated.

Also, haven't seen a showroom fresh super safari in a while!

Re: Review: The All-New Nissan Patrol (Y63) | Above the Ordinary - Part 1

Excellent images with meticulous details as ever. Nissan took some risk and made new Patrol which is an amalgamation of old school, but more of an evolution. Toyota, on the other hand, took a rather safe route with LC300, though the derivatives are more like a combination of retro and modern touches. Toyota also, in my opinion slightly complicated the Land Cruiser line up with new generation.
Wish to see New Pajero from Mitsubishi, and the trinity of Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol and Mitsubishi Pajero would be complete.

Very nice and detailed review
Look forward to driving updates as well.

For army brats like me, Nissan holds a special place in our heart, from the rides taken in army Jongas growing up.
The vehicle has truly come a long way.
